Abstract: A detonator for use with perforating gun assemblies is presented. The detonator includes a shell including a main explosive load. The shell may include one or more openings. A non-mass explosive body is disposed in the shell, adjacent the main explosive load. The non-mass explosive body includes one or more channels extending therethrough. The detonator includes a plug adjacent the non-mass explosive body, and a PCB adjacent the plug to facilitate electrical communication with the detonator. The plug may include an elongated opening extending therethrough. The channels of the non-mass explosive body, in combination with at least one of the openings of the shell or the elongated openings of the plug, are configured to introduce fluids, such as wellbore fluids, into the non-mass explosive body to disable the detonator.

Abstract: An explosive cartridge for underwater shooting which is self-disarming in the event of underwater misfire, which includes a closed shell with main explosive charge therein, and a conduit as a primer well, extending closed end first into the shell for support of an impact-responsive primer in detonating relationship with the main explosive charge. The conduit is supported intermediate its ends in a wall of the shell in watertight relationship therewith, and hence the open end of the conduit is outside, and spaced from, the shell interior. In response to force of impact initiation applied to the primer when supported in the conduit, the conduit member is further driven into the shell sufficiently to break its watertight relationship with the shell wall, the broken seal thus providing a path for ingress and egress of water for disarming the cartridge in the event of a misfire.Also provided is the above cartridge with impact-responsive primer emplaced in the conduit well member to provide a complete cartridge assembly ready for firing.

Abstract: A liquid-disabled blasting cap, especially useful in oil well perforation assemblies, has a perforated cap shell and a porous tubular member, e.g., a ceramic, adjacent the perforations. An ignition charge is present in the bore of the porous tubular member and in the cap's ignition train. The porous tubular member allows disabling liquids to be transferred to the ignition train from outside the cap through the holes in the shell wall, while at the same time acting as a protective barrier element between the holes and the ignition and explosive charges. In oil well caps, a B/Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 ignition powder is preferred because of its high-temperature stability.

Abstract: A mixture of about from 60 to 40 percent amorphous boron and about from 94 to 60 percent ferric oxide, useful as an ignition composition for electrically actuated blasting caps and squibs, has outstanding thermal stability, i.e., up to about 500.degree. C. making it especially suitable for use in blasting caps in oil wells that are deep and hot, e.g., in the liquid-disabled cap described in U.S. patent application Ser. No. 469,954. Bridgewire-sensitive compositions containing about from 10 to 20 percent boron are preferred. The compositions can be self-grained, or they may be grained preferably with a water-soluble polymeric binder.
