    摘要: An electric ignition type initiator applies an electrical signal via a pair of electrical signal input portions to a resistance element connected across the electrical signal input portions to heat the resistance element to cause the heat from the resistance element to ignite an explosive charge and thereby operate a vehicle safety apparatus. The resistance element is formed by etching a film of nickel-chrome alloy provided on the top surface of a substrate. The first side of the resistance element extends in a straight line between the electrical signal input portions, and the second side is inclined from each of the electrical signal input portions so that the width between the first side and each incline on the second side decreases as distance from the respective electrical signal input portion increases. The resistance element has its minimum sectional area where the inclines meet.

    摘要: An device for use in an electro-pyrotechnic initiator comprises a header, a foil resistive strip, a substrate, and a current source. The substrate is mounted on the header. The foil resistive strip is mounted on the substrate. The energy source is connected to the resistive strip. When current flows through the resistive strip, the resistive strip generates enough heat to spark autoignition of a pyrotechnic material. The pyrotechnic material is in direct contact with the resistive strip. For an energy input of up to 115 microjoules, the resistive strip can cause autoignition in less than 25 microseconds. In a second embodiment, an electro-pyrotechnic initiator for use in a “smart” airbag system comprises a header, a foil resistive strip, a substrate, a current source connected to the resistive strip, and a control circuit. The control circuit is designed such that it will cause current to flow through the resistive strip when the circuit receives an appropriate signal. A ceramic capacitor can be used as an energy source for the resistive strip.

    摘要: A circuit for controlling an electro-explosive device. The circuit includes a heating element, an input circuit and a load control circuit. The load control circuit is responsive to an electrical input provided by the input circuit for energizing the heating element. The heating element selectively causes ignition of the electro-explosive device when its level of energization reaches a firing level. The load control circuit substantially limits current in the heating element when the electrical input is less than a predetermined threshold for maintaining energization of the heating element at a level less than the firing level to prevent the ignition of the electro-explosive device. In contrast, the load control circuit applies substantially all of the electrical input to the heating element when the electrical input signal is greater than the predetermined threshold. This maintains energization of the heating element at a level greater than the firing level to cause the ignition of the electro-explosive device.
