摘要: The present invention features a system and method for detecting and predicting lightning strikes via specialized electrostatic detection using highly sensitive atmospheric static electric detection, interpretation, and alarm signal distribution. The system employs a detection means which includes a designated lightning sensor having a surface which carries a high impedance static voltage reference charge. This reference charge, called the pilot voltage, is a static charge delivered to the lightning sensor at very low currents. The pilot voltage influences the relative charge in the molecules found in the atmosphere immediately surrounding the lightning sensor. There is a gradual transition in the charge between the lightning sensor's surface and the molecules in the atmosphere that surrounds the sensor. It is this varying molecular state that creates a modulation process which the present invention uses to determine a lighting strike.

摘要: A magnetostrictive precipitation gage includes a catch tube having an upper opening configured to receive precipitation therein. A vertical magnetostrictive rod and corresponding magnetic float linearly displaceable thereon are used to determine the fluid level within the catch tube. More particularly, as the fluid level fluctuates in the catch tube, so will the vertical position of the float, which interacts magnetically with the magnetostrictive rod. Accordingly, the vertical position of the float may be detected to determine the fluid level within the catch tube, and calculations regarding precipitation may be performed.

摘要: An automated weather alert system using GIS technology automatically ingests weather data and processes the weather data to determine if localized weather conditions pose a threat to any of a plurality of business operations, each of which have a known location. In the event such threat exists, an employee having responsibility for a threatened business operation is provided with an alert message and asked to acknowledge receipt. Additional notification is automatically provided to the employee's supervisor if such acknowledgment is not received within a predetermined period of time.

摘要: A rain gauge includes a cylindrical rain holder having a float in the rain holder and a rainfall value indicator arranged so that as the float moves vertically in the rain holder a pointer moves circumferentially to indicate the amount of rainfall. A cover for the rain holder includes an opening that is less in area than the area of the surface of water in the rain holder, whereby the water level in the rain holder raises less than but in proportion to the rainfall. The pointer is on the float and the float is mounted to a vertical screw so as to rotate as it floats vertically, whereby the pointer points to lettering on the rain holder wall indicating the amount of rainfall. The pitch per inch of the screw is proportional to the ratio of the area of the surface of water in the rain holder to the area of the opening.

摘要: A method for producing a more accurate instantaneous unit hydrograph particularly for urban areas and for use in specifying the capacities of structures engineered to manage surface water runoff at the watershed catchment. The method uses map data verified by on-site inspections to obtain the input for the computer-performed calculation of initial probabilities, transition probabilities and mean waiting times, and subsequently the instantaneous unit hydrograph. This data includes the areas, links between streams, and slopes of various parts of the watershed.

摘要: The location of weather activity from a moving platform such as an aircraft is enhanced using triangulation in time. More particularly, a first measurement of the weather activity is made relative to the aircraft at a first time. A second measurement of the location of the weather activity is made from the aircraft at a second period in time. The first measurement is modified or updated to correct for the change in position of the aircraft between the first and second measurements and then the modified data is compared with the data of the second measurement to enhance the location of the weather activity.

摘要: An aerial sampler system includes an enclosure, a transfer system, and a measurement system. The enclosure is connected to an external surface of an aerial vehicle and receives atmospheric flow from the external surface of the aerial vehicle. The enclosure also directs at least some of the atmospheric flow into an aperture in the external surface. The transfer system transfers some of the atmospheric flow from the aperture to a measurement system. The measurement system is internal to the external surface of the aerial vehicle and measures atmospheric trace gases in the atmospheric flow.

摘要: A precipitation measuring system comprising a top thermal plate positioned to maximize exposure to falling precipitation and includes at least one ridge circumscribing the top surface for capturing precipitation. A second thermal plate is positioned under the top thermal plate to protect it from falling precipitation while still exposing it to the same atmospheric temperature and wind conditions. At least one solar radiation sensor is connected to the precipitation measuring system to measure solar radiation contacting at least one of the top and bottom thermal plates. During a precipitation event, the top and bottom thermal plates are maintained at a constant temperature and a power consumption curve for each thermal plate is quantified. The precipitation rate is measured by the difference in the power consumption curve for the top thermal plate and the power consumption curve for the bottom thermal plate.
