摘要: An optical fiber preform comprises a central core portion having a maximal value Nc of refractive index in the center, and outside the central core portion, comprising at least a depressed portion having a minimal value Nd of refractive index, a ring portion having a maximal value Nr of refractive index and an outside cladding layer having a maximal value No of refractive index. The optical fiber preform satisfies a relation of Nc≧Nr>No>Nd among the values of refractive index. A method of the optical fiber preform comprises fabricating a glass rod by inserting a rod containing at least the central core portion into a pipe containing at least the depressed portion and integrating them, fabricating a glass pipe having the ring portion, and fabricating a vitreous body by integrating the glass rod and the glass pipe by collapsing after inserting the glass rod into the glass pipe.

摘要: A layered fiber optic cable having a compressible layer for protecting the fiber optic core from damaging displacement due to force from the freezing of trapped ambient water. As ambient water within a protective conduit freezes, the water expands, applying a force on the fiber optic cable within the conduit. The compressible layer absorbs the expansion of the freezing water by compressing, therefore minimizing displacement of the fiber optic core and resulting signal degradation.

摘要: Disclosed is an optical fiber article for receiving pump radiation of a first wavelength for amplifying or generating radiation of a second wavelength. The optical fiber article includes a core for propagating light of the second wavelength. The core has a first index of refraction and includes a rare earth material. A cladding surrounds the core and has a second index of refraction that is less than the first index of refraction. The outer circumference of the cladding can include a plurality of sections, where the plurality of sections includes at least one substantially straight section and one inwardly curved section. The optical fiber article can also include at least one outer layer surrounding the cladding, where the index of refraction of the outer layer is less than the second refractive index. Methods for producing the optical fiber article are also disclosed, as well as methods for providing a preform for drawing such an optical fiber article.

摘要: A waveguide configuration comprising a core, a first cladding, a second cladding, and a buffer. The core includes an index of refraction and an acoustic shear velocity. The first cladding extends about the core and has an acoustic shear velocity which is less than that of the core and an index of refraction which is less than the core. The second cladding extends about the first cladding. The second cladding has an acoustic shear velocity which is greater than that of the first cladding and less than the acoustic shear velocity of the core. The second cladding has an index of refraction which is less than that of an optical mode. The buffer extends about the second cladding.
