A structure for incorporating fiber optic acoustic sensor in a seismic array includes means for supporting the sensor in a spiral around a central strength member in a manner to isolate shear waves from the sensor. In another aspect, an axially oriented sensor in a seismic array comprises a pressure sensitive optical fiber wound in a spiral around the axis, the fiber having a plurality of optical Bragg gratings and a plurality of channels. The preferred structure may include four tubes spiraling around the strength member. One of the tubes encloses an optical fiber sensor which is maintained in an extended orientation by fluid flow through the tube. Another of the tubes serves as a return path for fluid through the sensor tube. The other tubes enclose high speed and low speed data conductors, respectively. The sensor fiber may also be wound in a spiral around a compliant core in a manner to satisfy Poisson's Ratio such that strain on the compliant core does not alter the tension of the sensor fiber.

The apparatus includes a sensor, sensor instrumentation, a carbon coated optical fiber cable for extending between the sensor and the sensor instrumentation, a conduit for extending to a measurement location and configured to accommodate the optical fiber cable and the sensor, and a cable installing device configured to install the sensor and the optical fiber cable through the conduit and place the sensor at the measurement location. The cable installation device includes an apparatus for propelling a fluid along the conduit, such as a pump, a compressor, and the like. In the method, a sensor is installed at a measurement location by pumping the sensor and a carbon-coated optical fiber cable through a conduit, forming a seal around the cable where it enters the conduit, and connecting the cable to sensor instrumentation.

An apparatus for phase angle demodulation. The apparatus functions as a highly-linear angle-modulation demodulator and is particularly useful for seismic streamers comprising very-large arrays of optical hydrophones. The apparatus includes a demodulator and a processor in which the demodulator contains a signal input and a reference input. The apparatus is configured such that a phase modulated signal having a carrier frequency is connected to the signal input, and a reference signal is connected to the reference input. A difference frequency is defined as the non-zero difference in frequency between the reference signal frequency and the carrier frequency. The processor filters the output from the demodulator in order to separate the phase demodulated signal from the difference frequency. The phase modulated signal can be any form of angle modulated signal such as a Frequency Modulated (“FM”) signal, a Phase Modulated (“PM”) signal, or a Phase Generated Carrier (“PGC”) signal. When demodulating a phase-generated calTier signal, it can be advantageous to combine the output from more than one demodulator each driven by a reference signal with different frequencies from each other. At least one of these reference frequencies is not harmonically related to the fundamental carrier frequency of the phase modulated signal.
