摘要:
A method is disclosed whereby film images designed to produce a high-impact effect upon the members of an audience viewing a motion picture film are composited with other images designed to provide the conventional cinematic effect upon such audience members. "High-impact" film images photographed at forty-eight frames per second are composited with "conventional" images photographed at the traditional motion picture rate of twenty-four frames per second, with such images superimposed onto the same film frame. Certain portions of the motion picture image seen by the audience deliver a greater illusion of reality than other portions of the same motion picture image. In addition, the method described can accommodate the intercutting of discrete scenes presenting either high-impact or conventional cinema experience. The method disclosed here also allows easy conversion of films to the conventional twenty-four frames per second rate associated with conventional motion picture release and distribution.

A masking guide includes a plurality of masking frames each having a different peripheral dimension for positioning the frames concentrically one within another in a nested arrangement. Each masking frame has an aperture and the dimensions of the aperture vary from a base frame having an aperture of greatest dimension to an innermost masking frame having an aperture of the least dimension. The masking frames are positioned so that the dimensions of the apertures progressively decrease from the base frame to the innermost frame. The frames are pivotally connected one within another, permitting the frames to be raised and lowered relative to a proof. A photographic proof is positioned in underlying relation with the masking guide. The proof has a full print area which is exposed entirely through the aperture of the base frame. The remaining frames mask a selected portion of the full print area of the proof. As the masking frames are progressively moved into a position overlying the proof to expose the proof through each masking frame, a percentage of the print area is excluded from exposure through the aperture. Each masking frame corresponds to a negative mounting card having an aperture exposing the same print area or composition of the negative as the area of the proof which is exposed. Once the desired composition of a proof is selected from a masking frame, the corresponding negative mounting card is used to mount the negative.

A system is provided for a step optical printer to detect an out-of-frame condition in the printer projector and/or camera sections. The out-of-frame detector comprises a free wheeling encoder driven by film entering a gate of the printer and a second encoder driven by the printer drive mechanism. A comparator is connected to the outputs of the encoders to detect a lack of correspondence between the length of film entering the gate and the length of film being driven. Such lack of correspondence being indicative of an out-of-frame condition.

An optical film printer has a projector station and a camera station each of which interchangeably receive a complete 16 mm, regular 8 mm, or super-8 mm film transport unit, including drive sprocket wheels and incremental film advance mechanism. A lens is disposed between the stations. A pair of output members of a power transmission system rotate responsive to a drive motor. Each film transport unit incrementally advances film past an aperture responsive to rotation of an input member that engages one of the output members and when received by the corresponding station. Each film transport unit advances the same number of frames per unit angular displacement of the output members. The unit at the projector station is movable toward and away from the camera station, and the lens is adjustable in three directions. The power transmission system permits each output member to be independently driven in both directions or to be driven in synchronism. The power transmission system, film drive motor, reel drive motors, and control electronics are all housed in an enclosed chassis having a top panel on which the reels and the film transport units are all mounted.

Variation in the width of the shutter opening in a motion picture film copying machine is rapidly effected to control the amount of light passed through the shutter for transmission of the image from the master film onto the blank sensitized film running in registry therewith. Such rapid change in size of the opening in the shutter is effected by presetting the predetermined fixed extent of opening or closing of the opposed shutter halves in advance and shifting these halves to the scheduled predetermined position on signal from a sensor associated with the moving master film strip.
