摘要： There is provided a recording medium exchanging-type recording and reproducing apparatus in which its small-sized forming can be realized, either reproducing or recording operation can be carried out within a short period of time, and it is advantageous in view of light weight forming or cost. The first and second magazines for storing the tape cartridge in such a way that the tape cartridge can be inserted into or taken out are spaced apart in a lateral direction in the casing so as to cause their longitudinal directions to become in parallel to each other, and there is provided a transferring space extending along a longitudinal direction of these first and second magazines. The moving mechanism holds the tape cartridge and moves up and down in the transferring space. The delivering mechanism delivers the tape cartridge between the first and second magazines and the moving mechanism. The moving mechanism performs installing of the tape cartridge against the recording and reproducing mechanism arranged at a location near the lower part of the transferring space.

摘要： A storage library suitable for rack-mount and desktop installations. Internally the storage media cartridges and one or more media drives are arranged in a horseshoe configuration. The storage media cartridges are positioned in slots along the left and right sides of the library, and the media drives are positioned adjacent the back side. Additional slots may be provided near the middle of the horseshoe configuration to increase the library's storage capacity. A robotic mechanism is positioned between the two rows of storage media cartridges and operative to transport the storage media cartridges between the media drive and the slots. The slots are arranged so that the storage media cartridges can be installed and removed from the library through an opening provided in the front side of the library. The storage media cartridges are oriented in the slots so that their labels are viewable through the opening. A bar-code reader may be mounted on the robotic assembly to read bar-codes on the labels.

摘要： A cartridge picker assembly may include a frame having a first side wall and a second side wall positioned in spaced-apart relation and a cartridge access end. A lateral guide surface being substantially parallel to a lateral plane is associated with the first side wall of the frame. A thumb assembly is slidably mounted to the first and second side walls of the frame so that the thumb assembly is capable of moving toward and away from the cartridge access end of the frame. A guide member flaunted to the thumb assembly engages the lateral guide surface on the first side wall of the frame so that lateral motion of the thumb assembly is controlled as the thumb assembly moves toward and away from the cartridge access end of the frame.

A transport actuator and guide region (90) is provided within the frame, the transport actuator and guide region including both a guideway along which a cartridge transport assembly (92) reciprocates and an actuator (124) which causes the cartridge transport assembly to rotate from a first transport position to a second transport position. A library front section includes a cartridge magazine cavity (50) and a entry/exit port module (54). A library rear section includes a region for tape drives (60) and an auxiliary cartridge magazine (70). Cartridge magazines (64) are insertable into the cartridge magazine cavity when the library door is opened so that a reference surface of the cartridges face the transport actuator and guide region.

The hand mechanism comprises a picker for grasping the cartridge, which is movable along a predetermined path in the frontward and rearward directions so as to proceed towards the storage shelf and move back from the shelf; a plate portion which is rotatable so as to make the plate portion more distant from or closer to the predetermined path of the picker; and a read-out section attached to the plate portion, for reading an identification data provided to the cartridge. When the picker proceeds towards the storage shelf, the plate portion is rotated so as to make the plate portion and the attached read-out section more distant from the predetermined path of the picker.

摘要： A cassette handling system has a plurality of storage units each storing a plurality of cassettes and at least one tape drive unit. A carrier assembly transports a cassette from one unit to another by extracting the cassette from one of the units and inserting the cassette into another unit. An engaging assembly with a pair of couplers is mounted on a carrier of the carrier assembly. The couplers engage the cassette and hold the cassette above a reference platen on the top of the carrier. The reference platen defines a position from which the cassette is insertable into the units without obstruction. The engaging assembly disengages the cassette onto the reference platen and immediately re-engages the cassette in an accurately determined vertical position. The cassette is then inserted into the desired unit. The carrier assembly also has a threaded shaft which is tensioned for avoiding or damping vibration due to the movement of various components thereof.

摘要： A cartridge picker for selectively engaging and disengaging a cartridge may comprise a thumb assembly mounted to the cartridge picker so that the thumb assembly is moveable along a first displacement path between an extended position and a retracted position. An automatically splaying picker finger having an engagement end and a mounting end is mounted to the thumb assembly at the mounting end and is moveable between a retracted position and a splayed position, so that the finger moves into the splayed position when the engagement end is moved against a cartridge. A cartridge picker positioning system is operatively associated with the cartridge picker to move the cartridge picker between a first position and a second position along a second displacement path that is substantially perpendicular to the first displacement path. The finger disengages the cartridge when the thumb assembly is in the extended position and the cartridge picker is moved to the second position.
