Preferably, the head for recording and/or reproducing the control signal in the tape from an edge surface thereof is mounted at a tape guide member by which the tape is positioned in the direction of its width. Further, the control signal preferably has a low frequency, for example, of the order of 10 Hz, so as to minimize the spacing loss in recording or reproducing the control signal when the width of the tape is not precisely uniform.

A deflutter device for FM recording on magnetic tape which corrects for a varying time base error. Zero crossings from the outputs of a reference oscillator and a reference tone on a first tape track are compared by a flip-flop whose output is a pulse having a width corresponding to the time base error. The output pulse enables a binary counter to provide a digital output which is transformed to an analog voltage by a digital to analog converter. Zero crossings from a second tape track containing recorded data are detected and shifted by a delay multivibrator in accordance with the analog voltage thereby correcting for the time base error.

A digital signal of data and synchronization words is distributed to a plurality of circuit paths and transformed into non-return-to-zero inverted (NRZI) signals for application to a plurality of stationary parallel magnetic heads for recording the distributed NRZI signals along first parallel tracks on a magnetic tape when driven toward one end thereof and along second parallel tracks interleaved with the first tracks when the tape is driven toward the other end thereof. Each of the transducers has a differential characteristic with which the recorded signal is detected as a ternary signal, the detected signal is converted to a binary signal to recover the original digital signal. The synchronization word is detected from the recovered digital signal to generate a timing signal indicative of the position of each binary digit of the data word with respect to the detected synchronization word. In response to the timing control signal the timing of each binary digit derived from each transducer is aligned with those derived from the other transducers and arranged into a series of successive data words for conversion to an analog signal.

A system is disclosed for arranging digital data provided in a plurality of individual information channels. The digital data provided in each channel includes a continuous serial stream of digital data bits having synchronizing signals periodically included therein. All of the channels include a like number of data bits between successive synchronizing signals. Also the data in each of the individual information channels may be skewed in time with respect to corresponding portions of the data in the other information channels. A plurality of processors are provided with each being associated with a corresponding channel and each including a storage device together with means for sensing the occurrence of a synchronizing signal in the corresponding channel together with apparatus for storing data bits in selected positions in the storage means in accordance with the position that the data bits have in the serial stream with respect to the synchronizing signals. Data may be read out from selected positions in each of the storage devices in the various processors in a selected sequence. The readout is commenced under the control of a readout control after a predetermined delay period has lapsed after the sensing of the occurrence of a synchronizing signal in each of the channels. This delay period is dependent upon the maximum anticipated skew.

A position reference system is disclosed which provides an indication of the amount of mistracking of a magnetic head while the latter is stationed in its normal operating environment. The system is also capable of providing an indication of the spacing tolerances of a multi-core head. A special tracking medium is recorded against which the position of the head is compared. The sensitivity of the disclosed system permits a determination of mistracking as well as corrective adjustments to be made against visual observation only.
