摘要: Debris filters fit in fuel assembly lower tie plates and filter fluids passing therethrough. Filters use a series of adjacent plates with aligned peaks and valleys to create several channels. The plates have small excisions in diamond, triangle, or other debris-catching shapes, such as near a lower portion of the filter where fluid enters the filter. Excisions may alternate around each channel, such as four alternating cut-outs in 90-degree intervals about a channel circumference. Excisions may be sized to entrap smaller debris common in reactor coolant flow and liable for fretting damage to fuel cladding. Multiple vertical stages can be used in filters, with different channels for each stage. Ligaments may hold each stage to the next, potentially with a gap between stages for intermixing. Plates, peaks, valleys, ligaments, and excisions may all be formed in a single stamping operation to eliminate excess or overlapping pieces or extensions.

摘要: An insertable flux thimble interface for use in a bottom nozzle of a fuel assembly in a nuclear reactor (i.e., a bottom nozzle insert) is disclosed herein. In various aspects, the bottom nozzle insert has properties that are different from traditional bottom nozzle flux thimble interfaces. The properties of the bottom nozzle insert may mitigate wear phenomena observed on the flux thimble. For example, the bottom nozzle insert may be constructed from material that is different from the material of the bottom nozzle. In some aspects, the bottom nozzle insert is constructed from material that has a hardness that is less than the hardness the bottom nozzle material. In other aspects, the bottom nozzle insert is constructed from a material that has a hardness that is less than the hardness of the flux thimble material.

摘要: A damping area or “dash pot” on the upper ends of control rods absorb energy from dropped control rod assemblies without narrowing the diameter of guide tubes. As a result, coolant can freely flow through the guide tubes reducing boiling water issues. The dampening area reduces a separation distance between an outside surface of the control rod and an inside surface of the guide tubes decelerating the control rods when entering a top end of the guide tubes. In another example, the dampening area may be located on a drive shaft. The dampening area may have a larger diameter than an opening in a drive shaft support member that decelerates the drive shaft when dropped by a drive mechanism.

摘要: A fuel assembly for a nuclear reactor having an upstream minor portion defining an upstream end, a main portion, and a downstream minor portion defining a downstream end. Fuel rods extend in a flow interspace permitting a flow of coolant through the fuel assembly in contact with the fuel rods. Two elongated tubes form a respective internal passage extending in parallel with the fuel rods and enclosing a stream of the coolant. Each elongated tube having a bottom, an inlet at the upstream minor portion and an outlet at the downstream minor portion. Each elongated tube having an inlet pipe having an inlet end and an outlet end in the internal passage at a distance from the bottom, thereby forming a space in the internal passage between the outlet end and the bottom.

摘要: A nuclear reactor has a core installed on a lower core plate and formed from multiple fuel assemblies, each fuel assembly including a structural cage assembly. The structural cage assembly has an upper end fitting, mid grids, and a lower end fitting (LEF). The LEF positions the fuel assembly using four locating pins located at each corner of the LEF. The pins position the fuel assembly laterally by mating with receiving holes in the lower core plate. The locating pins have a chamfered tip with a flat end. The chamfered tip allows for a greater positioning margin when installing the fuel assembly in the core by guiding the pins into holes in the lower core plate, and the flat tip provides strength and stability in case the assembly is inadvertently rested on the tip of the pin instead of the LEF pads.

摘要: A pressurized water reactor (PWR) comprises a pressure vessel containing primary coolant water. A nuclear reactor core is disposed in the pressure vessel and includes a plurality of fuel assemblies. Each fuel assembly includes a plurality of fuel rods containing a fissile material. A control system includes a plurality of control rod assemblies (CRA's). Each CRA is guided by a corresponding CRA guide structure. A support element is disposed above the CRA guide structures and supports the CRA guide structures. The pressure vessel may be cylindrical, and the support element may comprise a support plate having a circular periphery supported by the cylindrical pressure vessel. The CRA guide structures suitably hang downward from the support plate. The lower end of each CRA guide structure may include alignment features that engage corresponding alignment features of the upper end of the corresponding fuel assembly.

摘要: A spring apparatus in accordance with the disclosed and claimed concept is usable in a nuclear installation. In one embodiment, the spring apparatus includes a plurality of springs that are in a compressed state and that are compressively engaged with an upper core plate of a nuclear reactor when the reactor is in a cold condition. However, when the reactor is in a hot condition, a spring of the plurality of springs is in a free state wherein a free end of the spring is in an uncompressed state and is disengaged from the upper core plate. In another embodiment, the spring apparatus employs a support apparatus that is also in accordance with the disclosed and claimed concept and that includes one or more bumpers that engage the springs of a spring pack from the underside.
