A converter for satellite communication reception which reduces signal losses and has a simplified assembling work is disclosed. In operation, orthogonal bipolarized signals transmitted from a satellite are branched into two propagation paths within a waveguide. A horizontally polarized wave is caused to proceed in a first propagation path, while a vertically polarized wave is caused to proceed in a second propagation path. A pair of probes supported by a circuit substrate and fitted to a case have tips that extend into two waveguides to receive the respective signals. By integrating the waveguide and the case by fastening, the first propagation path and the first waveguide are positioned to communicate with each other, as are the second propagation path and the second waveguide.

A selectable waveguide transitions between two positions to at least two independent signals by their polarization or frequency. This waveguide consists of dissimilar wave sections coupled to an antenna feed and is mechanically actuated for signal selection switching to route signals to output ports and respective probes that are polarization sensitive. The waveguide sections offer high polarization purity so that signal components remain separated to avoid mutual interference and low insertion loss to maintain system efficiency. Selectable waveguide can be extended for multiple polarization and frequency operation. Frequency selective surfaces and tapers establish pass bands and attenuation levels for frequency selection. The selectable waveguide is suitable for both frequency and polarization selectively in antenna system. Selectable waveguides can be cascaded and mechanically actuated for creating selectable waveguides arrangements enabling a wide variety of frequency and polarization selectively operating through a single apparatus.

An orthomode coupler (10) for directing both satellite uplink and downlink signals. The coupler (10) includes a waveguide structure (14) having a first cylindrical section (28), a conical section (30) and a second cylindrical section (34) providing a waveguide chamber (22) therein. The conical section (30) provides impedance matching of the downlink signal between the waveguide structure (14) and a plurality of symmetrically disposed downlink waveguides (38-44). The waveguides (38-44) are positioned around the waveguide structure (14) and are in signal communication with the waveguide chamber (22) through openings in the tapered section (30). Irises (46-52) are provided at the connection between the downlink waveguides (38-44) and the waveguide chamber (22) for impedance matching purposes.

A polarizer for two different frequency bands is described for exciting an antenna with a parabolic reflector. The polarizer has a waveguide section capable of carrying in each frequency band two mutually perpendicularly linearly polarized waves. For each frequency band, two waveguides having a rectangular cross-section are connected to the waveguide section separate from each other and mutually offset in the axial direction of the waveguide section. A respective waveguide is connected directly to the waveguide section for each polarization direction of the lower frequency band, whereas for the upper frequency band—from a connecting point (11, 12) on—each of the two waveguides is subdivided into two branches (18, 19, 20, 21) with each having identical rectangular cross-section. The respective branches terminate on the waveguide section at mutually opposing locations which are circumferentially offset relative to each other by 90° for the two polarization directions. To simplify the portion designated for the upper frequency band, the wider flat sides of the two branches (18, 19, 20, 21) abut each other at each of the connecting points (11, 12) in such a way that the front faces of the branches are aligned with each other for connection to the respective waveguide (7, 8). In addition, one of the branches (19, 21) of the two different polarization directions is twisted along its path about an angle of 180°.
