The reflector surface has a perturbed paraboloid geometrical shape that reflects most RF microwave energy along a beam peak pointing direction. The reflector surface reflects RF microwave energy towards the earth's surface in such a manner that the reflected RF microwave energy illuminates a narrow strip of the earth's surface from nadir to a point near the earth's horizon with substantially constant intensity. The offset feed horn is oriented and positioned such that it points away from the beam peak pointing direction.

An antenna feed with mode suppression includes a transition section, having a window for connecting to an output port of a waveguide and having inner and outer conductors forming a coaxial waveguide that couples energy from the waveguide into a horizontal TE11 mode in the coaxial waveguide. A polarizer section is coupled to the transition section and generates circular polarization from the horizontal mode of the transition section. A radiator section is coupled to the polarizer and provides an output signal for the antenna feed. The transition section includes an electrical short coupling the inner and outer conductors. The electrical short is disposed adjacent to the window of the transition section. A dielectric block is also disposed between the inner and outer conductors and adjacent to the electrical short along the axis of the coaxial waveguide. A surface of the dielectric block is coated with a thin film sheet resistance.

A polarization converter may include an annular waveguide comprising an inner conductor having an outer surface and an outer conductor having an inner surface coaxial with the outer surface of the inner conductor. A plurality of loading structures may be disposed within the annular waveguide to form a plurality of regions within the annular waveguide including an alternating sequence of high phase shift regions and low phase shift regions along a direction of propagation of an electromagnetic wave. The plurality of loading structures may be configured to introduce a predetermined relative phase shift between orthogonally polarized first and second components of the electromagnetic wave for a predetermined operating frequency band. The plurality of loading structures may be further configured to suppress propagation of one or more higher order modes in the annular waveguide over the operating frequency band.

A waveguide has distal, medial and proximal sections. The distal and medial sections rotate relative to each other and to the proximal section. In a first configuration, the waveguide transforms linearly polarized electromagnetic radiation at the proximal end of the proximal section to linearly polarized electromagnetic radiation at the distal end of the distal section and vice versa. In a second configuration, the waveguide transforms linearly polarized radiation at the proximal end of the proximal section into circularly polarized electromagnetic radiation at the distal end of the distal section and vice versa. Preferably, the distal and medial sections include respective eight-wavelength polarizers and the proximal section includes a quarter-wavelength polarizer. A multi-band antenna feed includes two such waveguides, one nested inside the other, for transforming electromagnetic radiation of respective frequency bands.

Each section is separated by spacer to maintain independence and avoid interaction. When the two 45 degree phase shift sections and are orthogonal to each other, the polarization detected is determined by the 90 degree phase shift section which provides compatibility with circularly polarized signal. When the two 45 degree phase shift sections and are aligned, the polarizer is in a linear polarization compatibility mode.

A dual frequency feed assembly employing a pair of coaxial circular wave guide cavities, each with respective probe. The higher frequency cavity, e.g. Ku band, is located within the lower frequency, e.g. C band cavity. A common motor is used to drive the two probes which have a common axis A. The lower frequency probe is coupled through the rear wall of the assembly to a rectangular waveguide. The higher frequency probe is also coupled through the rear wall of the assembly but via a coaxial line which is diverted from the axis A to exit beside the lower frequency waveguide. The two rectangular waveguides and the drive motor for the probes are all mounted on the rear of the assembly. In one embodiment of the invention the coaxial line extends from its probe to a housing on the body containing a signal processing circuit board. Connection to that board is made directly eliminating the need for any waveguide transmission line. In other embodiments of the invention, electronic switches, for example, ferrite switches are used in place of rotating probes. The probes may then be fixed and their coaxial lines fixed as well.
