In one embodiment, the azimuthal angle of arrival associated with the antenna is provided by phase difference between signals at the RHCP and Vpol ports or by phase difference between signals at the LHCP and Vpol ports. In another embodiment, a quad meanderline loaded antenna is adapted to simultaneously provide four independent beams. Any beam direction can be synthesized by combining the independent beams.

The shielded spiral sheet antenna concept permits a small efficient antenna structure that is much smaller than the electromagnetic wavelength. In such small structures, the radiation usually goes almost all directions. A geometrical structure that shields the radiation from absorbers, and it directs the radiation in the opposite direction. This is difficult to achieve in very small radiators. At the same time, the shielded spiral sheet structure is more efficient than other antennas. Its radiation is shielded from an adjacent absorber by an asymmetric metallic border. The specifications of the asymmetric metallic border are given by an operational mathematical procedure.

A meanderline coupler interconnects the horizontal element, at each of its ends, to the vertical elements. Additionally, the antenna includes a tuning element extending from the horizontal element and forming an acute angle with the adjacent vertical element.

The present invention features a dual mode, meander line loaded antenna (MLA) having an additional wideband plate or hat located above the horizontal top surface of the MLA antenna. The upper plate is spaced a predetermined distance above the MLA and held in place by dielectric blocks of a predetermined thickness. By properly spacing the additional plate, simultaneous wideband and narrowband reception can be performed. The added upper plate generally does not interfere with the usual narrowband operation of the original antenna structure. The modified antenna can accept radio frequency signals across a wide range of frequencies. The additional upper plate can be retrofitted to existing MLAs to modify them for dual mode operation.
