Divided magnet rotors R having a stepped skew rather than a helical skew are described. The stepped skew enables the use of straight magnet sections (44) that can be inserted into the rotor core notches (38) thereby eliminating the need to produce a helix from the rotor cage. The stepped skew is effective in decoupling stator slot order harmonics. In addition, the stepped skew rotor R includes, in some embodiments, open slots (22) so that the rotor is not subject to rotor bridge saturation.

An AC squirrel cage motor runs with a rotor current frequency equal to the slip of the motor times its excitation frequency. It is desirable to reduce the rotor current on start up by means of an increased resistance, and then to run the motor with a reduced resistance once it is started. This invention takes advantage of the skin effect of high frequency currents by increasing rotor end ring resistance during startup. After the motor has started up, and has reached full speed, the rotor frequency is reduced to merely the slip multiplied by the stator frequency. The skin effect on the rotor current is less, and the motor runs with reduced resistance.

Each of the winding groups has concentrated windings spaced at intervals of 30 degrees in a rotational direction to provide induction conductive winding sections at twelve locations. Each two of the induction conductive winding sections spaced at an interval of 90 degrees among the twelve induction conductive winding sections are connected to form one winding set such that six winding sets are formed in total in each of the winding groups. Current for rotation and current for levitation are conducted through the six winding sets in the windings for rotation and levitation to perform rotation and levitation controls of the rotor.
