Abstract: A mechanical-hydraulic double-acting drilling jar includes an inner tubular mandrel (12) telescopingly supported inside an outer tubular housing (14). The mandrel and the housing each consist of a plurality of tubular segments joined together, preferably by threaded inner connections. Upper (134) and lower (166) pressure pistons are slidably disposed within the housing, respectively closing upper and lower substantially sealed hydraulic chambers (132, 164). Longitudinal movement of the mandrel engages the collet (184), which in turn, translates either the upper piston (134) or the lower piston (166), depending on the direction of mandrel movement. As one of the pistons is moved, fluid pressure builds in the associated hydraulic chamber, retarding further movement of the mandrel, enabling potential energy to build in the drill string. Abstract: A drill string orienting tool (10) for insertion into a well bore (12) includes a housing (22) that has a plurality of inwardly projecting splines. A mandrel (32) is disposed within the housing (22). The orienting tool (10) has two operating positions, a running position, and an orienting position. The housing (22) is longitudinally moveable relative to the mandrel (32) between the running position and the orienting position. The mandrel (32) and the housing (22) define an annular chamber (38) that is vented to the exterior of the housing. A flexible metallic coiled tube (36) is disposed within the annular chamber (38) and contains hydraulic fluid. The upper end of the coiled tube (36) is coupled to the housing (22) and is in fluid communication with the first fluid chamber (104). The lower end of the coiled tube is coupled to the mandrel (32). The mandrel (32) has outwardly projecting splines (128) that are engageable with a corresponding set of inwardly projecting splines on the housing (22) when the orienting tool is in the running position. Abstract: The present invention is an improved apparatus for controlling the weight on the drill bit during operation. In this invention, an inner mandrel (1) has a telescoping movement in response to added drill string length at the surface. As the inner mandrel telescopes closed, it approaches a restrictor (5) which is fixedly disposed in the lower housing (4) of the drill string assembly. When the inner mandrel mates with the restrictor, a stand-pipe pressure increase occurs noticeable to the operator. The operator then stops the drill string and allows the motor to drill ahead. As the motor drills ahead, the inner mandrel telescopes open and the operation is then repeated.
