Abstract: A pyrotechnic switching and interruption apparatus comprises a conductive rod (30) to define a current conduction path between a first and second electrical conductor (10, 20). In a first operation state of the apparatus (1), the conductive rod (30) is arranged in the area between the first and second electrical conductor (10, 20) to electrically couple the first and second electrical conductor (10, 20) via the current conduction path. In a second operation state of the apparatus (1), a piston (40) is moved by a pyrotechnic actuator (50) to a position in the area between the first and second electrical conductor (10, 20) to interrupt the current conduction path between the first and second electrical conductor (10, 20).

Abstract: The switch contacts of a MEMS relay for a circuit interrupter are coated with a thin layer of liquid metal, and the MEMS relay is disposed in a sealed enclosure containing a gas medium. The gas medium provides an environmentally desirable alternative to sulfur hexafluoride (SFe), prevents oxidation of the liquid metal coating the relay switch contacts, and has sufficient dielectric strength in order to prevent current flow after separation of the switch contacts.
