Abstract:
A matched filter requiring no high-speed processor and which consumes less power is disclosed. Partial filters 301 - 30N obtained by dividing number of matched filter taps by N are provided with a controller 341 for controlling which partial filters are enabled. The controller 341 is supplied with maximum amount of delay of an input signal and with symbol timing. On the basis of the maximum amount of delay, the controller 341 enables only the minimum number of partial filters 301 - 30n that are capable of executing an amount of computation that is required in one symbol period. The enabled partial filters are used multiple number of times per symbol period and the output, each time, integrated sample by sample. Since the disabled partial filters will not operate, it is possible to reduce power consumption and computation time.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a device for carrying out search procedures, comprising a memory for storing a digital receive data sequence and a memory in which a predetermined correlation data sequence is stored. A correlator device comprises a first section (A1) in which partial sequences of the receive data sequence are correlated with partial sequences of the correlation data sequence. In the second section (A2), an adjustable number (K) of partial sequence correlation results (OUT1) are added up to produce an accumulated correlation result (OUT2).
Abstract:
A spread-spectrum sliding matched-filter searcher system comprises a partial matched-filter (201) that receives the input spread-spectrum signal (101). The searcher matches samples of the input signal with a tap length m of the reference code (111) and produces a first correlation value. The first correlation value is compared to a first threshold. When it equals or exceeds the first threshold, the first correlation value is integrated (202) to produce a second correlation value. This second value is compared (203) with a second threshold, which if met signifies the detection of the multi-path signal. The process is repeated until all signification multi-path signals are detected. The design of the present invention is flexible in nature because the searcher can be programmed to act like a matched-filter, a correlator, or a combination of both while significantly improving the search time and reducing the amount of hardware and complexity characteristic of a matched-filter.

A mobile station is provided for receiving a spread spectrum, code division transmission from at least one transmitter, such as a base station. The mobile station contains a receiver for outputting data samples, and further contains a multi-tap ring matched filter. The ring matched filter is constructed to have first circuitry for storing an individual one of a received data sample into an individual one of a plurality storage registers such that an active data sample that has been stored for the longest period of time is overwritten with a most recently received data sample. The ring matched filter is further constructed to have second circuitry for serially shifting coefficient bits of at least one multi-bit spreading code relative to the storage registers for sequentially and simultaneously correlating the at least one multi-bit spreading code with a plurality of corresponding stored data samples, while significantly reducing power consumption by limiting state changes of flip-flops.

The matched filter (6-10) according to the invention comprises N parallel M-sample long shift registers for receiving an equal number of input signals (6-21) at the sampling frequency of the input signal (6-21), wherein N>/=2; first means (6-22) for storing K M-sample long reference signals (6-27), wherein K>/=1; multiplexing means for applying one input signal (6-21) and one reference signal (6-27) at a time from said shift registers and said storage means to correlation calculation means (6-50) by applying alternately at least one combination of the input signals (6-21) and the reference signals (6-27) to the calculation means (6-50); calculation means (6-50) for calculating the correlation time-dividedly for each combination of an input signal (6-21) and a reference signal (6-27) so that correlation results calculated from different signals appear at the output of the calculation means (6-50) as a sequence.
Abstract:
A technique for correlating a stream of signal sample values with a predetermined binary code having a plurality of binary code bits is disclosed. The technique is realized by forming precombinations of groups of the signal sample values in the stream, and then temporally ordering the precombinations. Particular ones of the temporally ordered precombinations are selected based upon particular combinations of the plurality of binary code bits. The particular selected ones of the temporally ordered precombinations are then combined to form a correlation.
Abstract:
A receiving apparatus comprises a receiver receiving signals via multiple propagation paths having different propagation delays and converting the signals to digital samples for processing. A channel estimator is operatively coupled to the receiver for correlating periodically selected groups of the digital samples corresponding to known symbols and periodically producing numerical estimates related to amplitudes and phases of the delayed propagation paths. A filter system filters the numerical estimates using filters periodically adapted to center frequencies of variations of the numerical estimates. A data decoder is operatively coupled to the receiver and the filter system for decoding data using the filtered estimates and the digital data.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method and apparatus for adaptive processing in a communication system receiver. The adaptive processing facilitates power savings and permits enhanced performance when necessary. This extends a receiver's operation time in receivers that operate on batteries, such as in cordless telephones or cellular telephones. A receiver adopting the principles of the present invention evaluates the characteristics and dynamics of an incoming signal, and based on the quality of the incoming signal, adjusts various aspects of the receiver such as the on-time correlators and analog to digital converters, the timing circuits, the despread equalizers, and the combiner. If the receiver comprises a receiver operation in accordance with GSM, the receiver may cycle the MLSE detection algorithms or cross correlation may be done over fewer data symbols.
