Abstract: A gas sterilizable syringe (100) includes an enclosure having walls that define a fluid chamber (105). A flowable material is disposed within the fluid chamber of the enclosure. A plunger (104) is assembled with the enclosure and is moveable toward a distal end of the enclosure for dispensing the flowable material. One or more apertures (126) are formed in at least one of the walls of the enclosure. A gas permeable barrier (544) covers at least one of the apertures formed in at least one of the walls of the enclosure for enabling sterilization gases to pass through the at least one aperture covered by the gas permeable barrier while preventing the flowable material from passing through the at least one of aperture. The gas permeable barrier is permeable to the sterilization gases and impermeable to the flowable material disposed within the fluid chamber of the enclosure.

Abstract: A method of priming a surgical instrument, wherein the surgical instrument includes a shaft assembly including a lumen, and a valve assembly. The valve assembly includes a first inlet configured to receive the fluid from a fluid source, a second inlet configured to receive a suction from a vacuum source, an outlet in fluid communication with the lumen, a valve chamber, and at least one valve plug. The method includes activating the fluid source to provide the fluid to the first inlet, activating the vacuum source to provide the suction to the second inlet, transitioning the at least one valve plug from a first position to a second position, and transferring a first portion of the fluid from the first inlet toward the vacuum source through the second inlet thereby priming the surgical instrument.

Abstract: A computing system may determine a virtual boundary of a restricted access area in an operating room (OR). The computing system may identify a health care professional (HCP) in the OR and monitor a movement of the HCP. The computing system may determine an access authorization of the HCP. The computing system may determine whether the HCP is in a proximity to the virtual boundary area. If the computing system determines that the HCP is in a proximity to the virtual boundary area and the HCP is unauthorized to enter the virtual boundary area, the computing system may send a notification to the HCP. The notification may indicate that the HCP is unauthorized to enter the virtual boundary area. If the computing system determines that the HCP is authorized to enter the virtual boundary area, the computing system may allow the HCP to enter the virtual boundary area.

Abstract: A surgical stapling instrument comprising a tissue cutting knife movable through a staple cartridge to perform a staple firing stroke is disclosed. The stapling instrument further comprises a lockout system configured to prevent the tissue cutting knife from being moved through the staple firing stroke if the staple cartridge is missing from the stapling instrument and/or if the staple cartridge has been previously fired. The lockout system comprises a flexible spring that acts on the bottom of the tissue cutting knife at the initiation of the staple firing stroke to push the tissue cutting knife into a lockout recess if the staple cartridge is missing or has been previously fired.

Abstract: Adaptive control of operating room systems is performed based upon monitored data associated with the operating room. Monitoring systems may collect data regarding the patient being treated in the operating room, the healthcare professionals participating in the surgical procedure, and/or the environment in the operating room. The collected data, referred to as monitored data, may be communicated to a surgical computing system. The surgical computing system may evaluate received monitored data in view of the surgical tasks that are ongoing in the operating room. The surgical computing system may determine, based upon the monitored data, parameters for controlling various systems associated with the operating room, and may communicate the parameters to the operating room systems. The parameters may be received, for example, at lighting systems, air filtration and extraction systems, smoke evacuation systems, sound systems, video systems, and/or display monitor systems, which may modify operation based upon the received parameters.

Abstract: A surgical stapling instrument comprising a cartridge jaw configured to receive a staple cartridge, an anvil jaw, and a firing member configured to eject the staples from the staple cartridge during a firing stroke is disclosed. The anvil jaw comprises a stop extending into the cartridge jaw which prevents the staple cartridge from contacting the firing member when the staple cartridge is inserted into the cartridge jaw.

Abstract: A computing system may obtain and aggregate surgical monitoring data associated with multiple surgical procedures in multiple operating rooms (ORs), and the surgical monitoring data may be obtained via the surgical hubs in the ORs. Surgical resource utilization adjustments may be generated based on the aggregated surgical resource monitoring data, and an output may be generated based on the determined surgical resource utilization adjustment. The aggregated data may be used to generate resource allocation adjustments for the ORs. Resource allocation adjustments may include healthcare professional (HCP) assignment adjustments, surgery scheduling adjustments, surgical instrument allocation adjustments, OR layout adjustments, and/or medical facility layout adjustment(s), etc. The computing system may generate a control signal for adjusting an HCP assignment, adjusting surgery scheduling, adjusting surgical instrument allocation, adjusting surgical plans, notifying HCPs and/or administrators of surgical resource adjustments, notifying potential issues and/or providing recommendations.

Abstract: An interactive and dynamic surgical simulation system may be used in the context of a computer-implemented interactive surgical system. The surgical simulation system may enable enhanced navigation, such as to provide simulation support during a live surgical procedure. A processor may be configured to identify a procedure plan for a live surgical procedure and identify a stored simulation of a surgical procedure that corresponds to the procedure plan. The processor may determine, from information received during the live surgical procedure, a present portion of the live surgical procedure. And the processor may retrieve, from the stored simulation, a portion of the stored simulation that corresponds to the present portion of the live surgical procedure. The portion of the simulation that corresponds to the present portion of the live surgical procedure may then be presented for user interaction.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and instrumentalities for simulating a surgical task may be provided. In examples, a request for a simulation of the surgical task may be received. For example, the surgical task may comprise a medical procedure and a medical procedure context. Surgical event data associated with the surgical task may be received, for example, responsive to a database query. For example, the surgical event data may comprise historical data associated with the medical procedure and/or context data associated with the medical procedure context. One or more simulation parameter values may be generated, for example, based on the surgical event data. The simulation may be executed based on the simulation parameter values.

Abstract: A surgical staple comprising a substrate and one or more coatings which delay the bioabsorption of the substrate. The coating can be selected so as to affect the environment surrounding the staple once the staple is implanted in the patient. The effect on the environment can cause the bioabsorption to occur within a desired time frame.
