Abstract: A surgical staple comprising a substrate and one or more coatings which delay the bioabsorption of the substrate. The coating can be selected so as to affect the environment surrounding the staple once the staple is implanted in the patient. The effect on the environment can cause the bioabsorption to occur within a desired time frame.

Abstract: A method and apparatus of adaptively controlling a surgical stapling instrument are disclose. The method includes identifying a staple cartridge type, configuring the surgical stapling instrument based on the identified staple cartridge, and adaptively controlling, by a control circuit, operation/functionality of the surgical stapling instrument based on the configuration of the surgical stapling instrument loaded with the identified staple cartridge type. The apparatus includes a control circuit including a microcontroller and a memory coupled to the microcontroller. The memory stores machine executable instructions that when executed by the microcontroller cause the microcontroller to execute the above method.

Abstract: Bioabsorbable staples are disclosed that have sufficient mechanical properties throughout a healing window of patient tissue. Further, it is disclosed a system of staple cartridges for use with a surgical stapling instrument. The system comprises a first staple cartridge, comprising: a first cartridge body; and first staples removably stored in said first cartridge body, wherein said first staples are comprised of a first alloy, wherein said first staples are configured to fracture within a first bioabsorption period after being implanted in a patient, and wherein said first alloy comprises a first ductility. The system further comprises a second staple cartridge, comprising: a second cartridge body; and second staples removably stored in said second cartridge body, wherein said second staples are comprised of a second alloy, wherein said second staples are configured to fracture within a second bioabsorption period after being implanted in a patient, wherein said second alloy comprises a second ductility, wherein said second bioabsorption period is shorter than said first bioabsorption period, and wherein said first ductility is greater than said second ductility.

Abstract: A wound cover device can comprise a backing, a micro-structure device, and one or more of a wound dressing and a skin replacement layer. The backing can be stretchable. The micro-structure device can comprise a plurality of fasteners, such as micro-staples, micro-pins, micro-barbs and the like, that can be used to attach the wound cover device to tissue such as skin. The micro-structure device can be stretchable to stretch with the backing. The micro-structure device can be configured such that the fasteners are positioned in a two-dimensional pattern or fill-in an interior portion of the wound dressing or skin replacement layer. The fasteners of the micro-structure device can extend through the wound dressing or skin replacement layer. The micro-structure device can additionally be placed around a perimeter or edge region of the backing.

Abstract: A staple cartridge assembly includes a cartridge body with a deck, a longitudinal slot defined in the deck, and staple cavities defined in the deck. The staple cartridge assembly includes staples removably stored in the staple cavities, wherein the staples are deployable from the staple cavities into tissue of a patient, and wherein the staples comprise substrates comprised of metal that degrades when exposed to a degradation source in the patient. The staple cartridge assembly includes an implantable adjunct, wherein the staples are configured to hold the implantable adjunct to the tissue, and wherein the implantable adjunct is configured to delay an initiation of the degradation of regions of the metal in contact with the implantable adjunct in the patient, and wherein the implantable adjunct is configured to modify a local environment surrounding the staples to control a degradation rate of the staples after the initial delay.

Abstract: Stapling devices and staple cartridges are disclosed. A stapling device can include a jaw configured to sequentially receive a plurality of dissimilar staple cartridges having different bioabsorbable components. An adjustment module can implement a firing control algorithm based on which dissimilar staple cartridge is received in the jaw. A staple cartridge can include staples comprised of a bioabsorbable metal alloy and configured to degrade at a staple degradation rate over an expected staple life in the patient. A staple cartridge can also include an implantable layer comprised of a bioabsorbable polymer and configured to degrade at a layer degradation rate over an expected layer life in the patient. The staple degradation rate and the implantable degradation rate can be different. The implantable layer can mechanically support at least a portion of a staple for a time in the expected staple life.
