Abstract: A compression staple insertion kit includes first and second elongate handles, each including a handle arm having a proximal end and a distal end, distal from the proximal end. A boss extend is outwardly from the distal end. A central longitudinal axis extends between the arms. The handle arms are pivotally attached to each other at the distal ends at a pivot, which extends along the central longitudinal axis. A slider is slidingly attached to the handle. The slider is movable between a staple securing position at the distal end, wherein proximal ends are biased toward each other and a staple release position toward the proximal end, wherein the proximal ends are biased away from each other. A staple is disposed over the bosses.

Abstract: A staple cartridge assembly includes a cartridge body with a deck, a longitudinal slot defined in the deck, and staple cavities defined in the deck. The staple cartridge assembly includes staples removably stored in the staple cavities, wherein the staples are deployable from the staple cavities into tissue of a patient, and wherein the staples comprise substrates comprised of metal that degrades when exposed to a degradation source in the patient. The staple cartridge assembly includes an implantable adjunct, wherein the staples are configured to hold the implantable adjunct to the tissue, and wherein the implantable adjunct is configured to delay an initiation of the degradation of regions of the metal in contact with the implantable adjunct in the patient, and wherein the implantable adjunct is configured to modify a local environment surrounding the staples to control a degradation rate of the staples after the initial delay.

Abstract: Stapling devices and staple cartridges are disclosed. A stapling device can include a jaw configured to sequentially receive a plurality of dissimilar staple cartridges having different bioabsorbable components. An adjustment module can implement a firing control algorithm based on which dissimilar staple cartridge is received in the jaw. A staple cartridge can include staples comprised of a bioabsorbable metal alloy and configured to degrade at a staple degradation rate over an expected staple life in the patient. A staple cartridge can also include an implantable layer comprised of a bioabsorbable polymer and configured to degrade at a layer degradation rate over an expected layer life in the patient. The staple degradation rate and the implantable degradation rate can be different. The implantable layer can mechanically support at least a portion of a staple for a time in the expected staple life.

Abstract: A device for applying a hemostatic clip assembly includes a proximal delivery catheter having a handle assembly and an elongated catheter body defining a longitudinal axis extending distally from the handle assembly, and a distal clip assembly removably connected to a distal end of the catheter body. The distal clip assembly includes a distal clip housing, a jaw assembly and a jaw adapter yoke. The jaw assembly has a pair of jaw members fixed to the distal clip housing by a first pin oriented orthogonally relative to the longitudinal axis. The jaw adapter yoke is operatively connected to the jaw members. The proximal delivery catheter is configured to transmit linear motion along and torsion about the longitudinal axis to at least a portion of the distal clip assembly. At least one of the jaw members is configured to rotate about the first pin between an open and a closed configuration.

Abstract: A method and apparatus of adaptively controlling a surgical stapling instrument are disclose. The method includes identifying a staple cartridge type, configuring the surgical stapling instrument based on the identified staple cartridge, and adaptively controlling, by a control circuit, operation/functionality of the surgical stapling instrument based on the configuration of the surgical stapling instrument loaded with the identified staple cartridge type. The apparatus includes a control circuit including a microcontroller and a memory coupled to the microcontroller. The memory stores machine executable instructions that when executed by the microcontroller cause the microcontroller to execute the above method.

Abstract: A surgical instrument (7000) is disclosed. The surgical instrument, comprises a handle; a shaft extending distally from said handle, wherein said shaft defines a longitudinal axis; an end effector extending distally from said shaft; a firing drive.The firing drive comprises: an electric motor (7630) positioned in said handle; a gear train (7650) operably engaged with an output of said electric motor; a firing rack (7680) operably engaged with said gear train, wherein said firing rack is movable longitudinally from a proximal unactuated position toward a distal actuated position by said gear train when said electric motor is actuated to perform an actuation stroke; and a firing member movable distally by said firing rack during said actuation stroke. The instrument further comprises a bailout drive (7900) actuatable to retract said firing rack and said firing member proximally after said actuation stroke, wherein the actuation of said bailout drive does not operably disengage said gear train from said firing rack.
