Abstract:
A filter capable of performing collection of organic materials, bacteria, viruses and other hazardous materials and sterilization/decomposition of collected matter at low cost with extremely high efficiency; and a process for producing the same. In particular, a porous semiconductor constituted of a semiconductor material capable of light emission is formed inside or on the surface of a porous ceramic or metal as a substrate. Electrodes are fitted thereto to thereby obtain a filter. Fluid is filtered while applying voltage so as to emit ultraviolet radiation. Thus, sterilization/decomposition of hazardous materials, etc. can be performed simultaneously with the filtration thereof.
Abstract:
An improved system and method for reading an upconversion response from nanoparticle inks is provided. A is adapted to direct a near-infrared excitation wavelength at a readable indicia, resulting in a near-infrared emission wavelength created by the upconverting nanoparticle inks. A short pass filter may filter the near-infrared excitation wavelength. A camera is in operable communication with the short pass filter and receives the near-infrared emission wavelength of the readable indicia. The system may further include an integrated circuit adapted to receive the near- infrared emission wavelength from the camera and generate a corresponding signal. A readable application may be in operable communication with the integrated circuit. The readable application receives the corresponding signal, manipulates the signal, decodes the signal into an output, and displays and/or stores the output.
Abstract:

A display apparatus (100') includes a substrate (115a) and a light switch (210). A light source (310') is provided at the side of the substrate (115a) and emits light of which wavelength is in the range of ultraviolet or cyan. A polarizing sheet (116) , as well as a photoluminescence film (110'), is provided in front of the light source (310'). Under the excitation of the light source (310'), the photoluminescence film (110') can emit red light, green light, blue light and/or intermediate color light among red, green and blue.

AUTHENTICATING AND IDENTIFYING OBJECTS BY DETECTING MARKINGS THROUGH TURBID MATERIALS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Described herein are techniques for authenticating and identifying objects by detecting markings through turbid materials. In one embodiment, a container includes a substrate having an outer surface and an inner surface and including a turbid material. The container also includes a marking adjacent to the inner surface and including a luminescent material that exhibits photoluminescence in response to incident light directed on the outer surface. The photoluminescence has a quantum efficiency of at least 20 percent and a peak emission wavelength in the near infrared range.
Abstract:
Fluorescent or phosphorescent nanoparticles, fluorescent or phosphorescent magnetic nanoparticles, combustion-based methods for their synthesis, and methods to flanctionalize them are described. The methods provided by the invention are simplified, efficient and cost effective as compared to prior art methods. The resulting fluorescent or phosphorescent nanoparticles have reduced tendancy toward aggregation, and diminished need for postmanufacturing processing steps. The particles may be manufactured with combinations of lanthanides so as to absorb and emit light over a variety of wavelengths.
