Disclosed herein is a method for detecting copper(II) in a liquid sample. The method generally comprises contacting a liquid sample, such as water, with a chromogen, such as TMB, in the presence of a suitable halide, such as chloride or bromide, and an oxidizer, such as hydrogen peroxide; and detecting a color change of the chromogen. A color change signifies the presence of copper in the sample. Compositions and kits are also provided. The presence of said suitable halide was found to amplify the detection signal.

To determine the concentration of an oxoanion in an aqueous solution, an aluminum reagent is added to the aqueous solution to form an optical analysis solution. Addition of the aluminum reagent may or may not form an alumino-oxoanion hydroxide hydrate precipitate. Light is directed into the optical analysis solution to determine an optical response of the optical analysis solution. Thereafter, the concentration of the oxoanion in the aqueous solution is determined based on the optical response of the optical analysis solution. For example, the concentration of the oxoanion may be calculated using a molar ratio relating oxoanion concentration to aluminum reagent concentration, when the aluminum reagent concentration corresponds to an inflection point of the optical response of the optical analysis solution.

Provided, among other things, is a breach or contamination indicating elastomeric article for indicating a breach or contamination by a selected chemical or group of chemicals, the article having an exterior and interior and comprising: (1) an interior elastomeric layer selected to resist permeation by the selected chemical(s); and (2) exterior thereto, a contiguous or dis-contiguous first indicating layer comprising a dye or pigment and an opacifying agent, the dye or pigment providing the layer with color, the first indicating layer changing color and/or opacity when contacted with a selected chemical such regions of the article where the layer is so contacted contrast with non-contacted regions. A subsequent, interior layer can provide a safety buffer allowing for removal or disposal prior to any potential for harm. A second, interior indicating layer can be used to make the warning louder when a serious breach is occurring.

A composition and an assay solution for the determination of dissolved iron concentration comprising an α-diimine compound and a reducing agent are described. The α-diimine compound acts as a colorimetric iron sensor. The α-diimine compound coordinates to ferrous ions in solution to give a colored diimine-iron complex. The absorbance of the resulting diimine-iron solution is measured and is a function of the analyte's iron concentration. The iron concentration of a solution can be determined by treating the solution with the present composition, measuring the absorbance, and comparing the absorbance to the absorbance of assay standards of known concentration.
