The air pathway (52) contains a blower (38) within the air pathway (52), an air flow sensor (26) within the air pathway (52), a liquid reservoir (56) operatively-connected to the air pathway (52), and component which may be an air pathway temperature sensor (28) and/or a breathing circuit heating element. The blower (38) causes air to move in the air pathway (52), while the air flow sensor (26) generates air flow data about the air moving in the air pathway (52). The heater plate (26) contains a heater plate temperature sensor (34), and the heater plate temperature sensor (34) generates heater plate temperature data. An external wire (60) is operatively-connected to the controller (22) and the component. The ambient temperature sensor (20) is located on the external wire (60). The heater plate (26), and the heater plate temperature sensor (34) are operatively-connected to the controller (22), and the controller (22) receives the ambient temperature data, the air flow data, and the heater plate temperature data to calculate the target heater plate temperature, based on the dew point temperature. A method of modulating a humidifier heater plate, a humidifier, and a medical device may also include the dew point sensor system.
