A process for producing an aromatic polyester carbonate which comprises providing a raw material mixture comprising an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, an aromatic diol, and a diaryl carbonate, a prepolymerization step, a crystallization step, and a solid-state polymerization step as essential steps, and optionally has also a compression forming step. The process has allowed the production of an aromatic polyester carbonate which is reduced in discoloration and has an increased degree of polymerization with good productivity.

A wholly aromatic polyester carbonate having a satisfactory color tone and excellent thermal stability. This polymer has an alkali metal content as low as 10 ppm or below. The polymer is advantageously produced by reacting an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, an aromatic diol, and a diaryl carbonate in a specific molar proportion using a pyridine compound as a catalyst.

The present invention relates to a continuous process for the preparation of copolycarbonate resins having great advantages in preparing molding materials of intricate structure and of thin film molding materials can easily be processed at relatively low temperatures; they have excellent impact strength especially at low temperatures; and they have excellent melt flow that is 2 to 3 times that of the conventional polycarbonates. The present invention is carried out by means of a novel polycondensation process, which comprises dividing a tube type reactor into 2 steps for a continuous synthesis in a serially connected manner to simplify the production process; varying Reynols Number, Linear Viscosity and Weber Number to increase the rate of reaction for an incorporation of copolymer into the polymer backbone.

The invention also relates to the use of the inventive carbonates as lubricants in spinning preparations for synthetic fibers. They are prepared by reacting alkoxylated fatty acids with diols and dialkyl carbonates.

Block copolyestercarbonates may be prepared by first conducting a reaction between resorcinol or an alkyl- or haloresorcinol and at least one aromatic dicarboxylic acid chloride, preferably isophthaloyl chloride, terephthaloyl chloride or a mixture thereof, to produce a hydroxy-terminated polyester intermediate and then conducting a reaction of the intermediate with a dihydroxyaromatic compound, preferably bisphenol A, and a carbonyl halide, preferably phosgene. The products have excellent physical properties, including a high degree of weatherability. They may be blended with other polymers such as polycarbonates and poly(alkylene carboxylates) to improve the weatherability thereof.

Optically active polycarbonate, polyester, and polyurethane polymers prepared from monomers containing optically pure spirobiindane moieties are disclosed. The chiral spirobiindane polymers are of high molecular weight and exhibit high optical rotations. In addition, the optically active polymers are useful in the fabrication of optoelectronics devices and as polarizing coatings or filters or as polarized lenses.

A method of controlling hemostasis by applying a hemostatic agent in a tissue sealant composition. The tissue sealant is a biodegradable, biocompatible synthetic polymer that may not intrinsically possess strong hemostatic properties. Inclusion of a hemostatic material in the tissue sealant can control bleeding at the site and may also provide improved adherence of the sealant to tissue and provide shorter healing times.
