Abstract:
A magnetic head is produced by forming nonlinear rails on the flying plane by etching and polishing the plane with abrasive cloth such as nonwoven polyester fabric in order to remove the redeposit forward during the etching of the magnetic head slider and to form minute chamfers on the plane. As a result, the redeposit is removed and the stability of magnetic head flying is improved.
Abstract:
A floating head slider for a disk driving apparatus, which floats above a disk-like recording medium when this medium is rotated. The head slider includes an air lubrication surface formed on the surface opposed to the disk-like recording medium; a tapered portion on the air inflow side of the air lubrication surface; a recess along the center line extending from the air inflow side of the air lubrication surface to the air outflow side, the recess having the air inflow side thereof closed and the air outflow side thereof open and having a predetermined depth to generate a negative pressure; and a groove extending from the recess to the end of the air inflow side of the air lubrication surface along the center line, and being wider than the recess which divides the air lubrication surface but having the same depth. This head slider can float a predetermined distance above the surface of the disk recording medium in a stable state due to the positive pressure occurring on the air lubrication surface and the surface of the disk-like recording medium driven for rotation and the negative pressure generated by the recess.
Abstract:
A laminate comprising a conductor, such as a stainless steel foil, and a polyimide precursor resin layer and a photosensitive resin layer successively formed on the conductor, or a laminate for the preparation of an HDD suspension, comprising a stainless steel foil and a polyimide precursor resin layer and a photosensitive resin layer successively formed on the stainless steel foil. In particular, the use of a resin having repeating units derived from specified aromatic diamine and aromatic carboxylic dianhydride as the polyimide precursor resin enables an insulator to be very easily fabricated on the conductor with high fabrication accuracy and excellent reliability and, when the laminate is used in the production of an HDD suspension, enables an HDD suspension integral with circuit wiring to be provided with high accuracy.
Abstract:
First, a mask (2) having a predetermined pattern is formed on a surface to be processed of a magnetic head slider substrate (1) containg aluminum oxide and titanium carbide as main components. The magnetic head slider substrate (1) with this mask (2) formed thereon is set on an electrode provided in an etching apparatus. A reactive gas and an inert gas are introduced into an excitation zone (14) in the etching apparatus, and these gases are plasma excited, a high frequency bias voltage being applied to the above-mentioned electrode. Consequently, reactive gas ions (4) and an inert gas ions (5) obtained by the plasma excitation are drawn to the magnetic head slider substrate (1), and the reactive etching by the reactive gas ions (4) and the sputter etching by the inert gas ions (5) are carried out simultaneously.
Abstract:
An actuator arm assembly for a hard disk drive which does not have a flexbeam substrate. The actuator arm assembly includes an actuator arm (12) and a magnetic head (16) that is electrically coupled to the electronics of the drive by a plurality of wires (22). The wires are also constructed to structurally support the head in a position cantilevered from the actuator arm. To provide structural integrity, the wires can be either twisted, constructed from beryllium copper, attached to a polyimide sheet or have any combination of the above. The wires may also have a sheet of viscoelastomeric material to dampen the structure.

A tape drive machine has: guide rollers (18, 20) with fixed lower flanges to guide the lower edge of the tape; air bearings (14, 16) with upper tape edge guides which are supported by torsionally highly flexible cantilevers to permit the guides to adapt to their position to run flat on the upper edge of the tape; air bearings with relatively few air holes joined by grooves; a lacing mechanism (82-98) with a part-circular arcuate path for a leader block pin (98); and a tape path which is mirror-image symmetrical about the central axis (108) of head (12).

Opposed magnetic head sliders (22, 24) for dual sided recording on a flexible disk (26) include one or more slots (32) provided longitudinally in one of the opposed rails in order to allow the slotted rail (28) to fly and reduce flying height relative to a flexible disk (26) operating at an elevated rotational speed. The sliders additionally have a diagonally blended contour (96) for urging contaminants away from the film interface between the head sliders (22, 24) and the flexible disk (26).
Abstract:
A conductive ceramic stabilizer (18) minimizes the drag experienced in a magnetic interface between the stabilizer (18) and a rapidly moving pliable magnetic disk (10). The stabilizer (18) includes a ceramic stabilizing block (20) with an opening (22) through which a magnetic head (24) protrudes for engagement with the disk. A circumferential air bearing surface (26) on the ceramic block (20) surrounds the opening (22) adjacent the disk for generating coupling forces that deform the disk out of its nominal plane (40) and into intimate contact with a transducing gap (32) on the head. A preferred air bearing surface (26) should have an RMS surface roughness of at least 10 Angstroms and a resistivity of less than 10 ohms-cm. A preferred ceramic material for the block (20) is a conductive barium titanate material.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for detecting mechanical interaction in a disk drive system (10) which includes one or more rotatable disks (14), one or more radially movable heads (18) cooperating with the disks for transfer of data therebetween, and a carriage (20) for supporting the heads, has a waveguide (24), coupled to the carriage, for conducting acoustic stress waves corresponding to the mechanical interaction. The acoustic stress waves conducted from the carriage are then preamplified (32) and selectively filtered (34) before being fed to a signal processor and waveform analyzer. In such a manner, specific frequencies or ranges of frequencies of interest, each of which correspond to a particular mechanical interaction are analyzed by the waveform analyzer.
