摘要: Compositions and methods for reducing or preventing mosquito egg development are provided. Typically, the compositions include an effective amount of a compound that reduces, inhibits, or prevents, expression of a mosquito EOF1, Nasrat, Closca, Polehole Nudel, CATL3, DCE2, DCE4, or DCE5 gene, or a gene product thereof, for example EOF1 or Nudel mRNA or protein. The compound can be a functional nucleic acid such as antisense molecule, siRNA, miRNA, ribozymes, RNAi, or external guide sequences, a gene editing composition, or a protease inhibitor. The disclosed methods typically include contacting mosquito cells with an effective amount of one or more of the disclosed compositions, and can be used to reduce, inhibit, or prevent egg development in an effective number of mosquitoes to reduce transmission of one or more infections or diseases.

摘要: Apparatus and methods are disclosed for providing virtual bags that can be used to simulate and quantify performance of different explosive detection system architectures. The virtual bags can be provided to a simulator for designing and simulating operation of imaging scanners, including X-ray and millimeter-wave based threat detection equipment deployed in transit facilities and other secure locations. One example method of generating container models for a container inspection system includes generating a plurality of objects using a probability function; generating a respective position, scale, and orientation for each of the objects within a container having a defined boundary; generating pairings for a respective material for each of the objects using a probability function; and storing a container instance indicating at least one of: the generated pairings, the respective object positions, object scales, object orientation, the objects, or the respective materials in a computer-readable storage device.

摘要: A bariatric balloon system for reducing the volume of the stomach, featuring a plurality of balloons each fluidly connected to a tube with a tube port at its end. The system is secured to the abdominal wall. The system can be implanted such that the port is outside the skin or is under the skin. The tube extends through the skin and/or muscle and fat to the stomach wherein the balloons are placed. The balloons can be inflated by introducing fluid such as saline to the tube via the port.

摘要: An oral and oropharyngeal cancer screening system and associated methods are disclosed. In at least one embodiment, the screening system provides an at least one oral and oropharyngeal cancer screening device configured for selectively capturing images of an oropharyngeal area of an at least one patient. The screening device provides an elongate, relatively compact housing, a distal end of the housing being selectively bendable. An imaging module is positioned within the housing, the imaging module providing a lens, an at least one light source, and an imaging sensor positioned in the distal end of the housing. A user application resides in memory on an at least one user device in selective communication with the at least one screening device. The user application is configured for receiving images captured by the at least one screening device and recording risk factors, automatically analyzing the captured images and potential health-risk factors to screen for OPML and oral and oropharyngeal risk.

摘要: A tubular pulsatile ventricular assist device (PVAD) system for providing forward flow of blood in a pulsatile, peristaltic, and non-hemolytic manner to help reduce the amount of blood clotting associated with current ventricular devices on the market. The system can encircle a portion of a blood vessel, and the system can sequentially apply a pressure through each port in a particular pre-determined patter so as to selectively occlude the lumen, thereby creating a pulsatile, peristaltic movement along a length of system. Said movement causes blood to flow through the portion of the blood vessel.

摘要: Systems and methods for metagenomic analysis are provided. A method of metagenome sequence analysis of two or more samples can include (i) counting the abundance of each k-mer deconstructed from sequencing reads of nucleic acids in each sample, and (ii) using a vector space model to compute the genetic distance between each of the two or more samples according to the abundance of the k-mers. In some embodiments, counting includes (a) constructing a k-mer histogram containing the distribution of k-mers for each sample, and (b) dividing k-mers into partitions having approximately an equal number of k-mers based on the histogram, preparing an inverted index of the k-mers in each partition, and assigning a weight to each k-mer according to its abundance. Method of developing diagnostic and prognostic information using the methods of sequence analysis are also provided.
