A laminate includes the following substantially coextensive layers in the following order: (a) a non-sealable, self-supporting, thermoformable copolyester film layer having a first surface and a second surface, the second surface constituting an outermost, exposed surface of the laminate; (b) a laminating adhesive layer on the first surface of the thermoformable copolyester film layer; and (c) a self-supporting, thermoformable structural film layer having a first surface and a second surface, the first surface contacting the laminating adhesive layer. Polyethylene terephthalate constitutes at least 80% by weight of the self- supporting thermoformable copolyester film layer; the thermoformable structural film layer includes a polymer selected from the group consisting of polyamides, polypropylene, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, ionomers, ethylene acrylic acid copolymers, ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers, polystyrene, ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymers and polyvinylidene chloride; the thermoformable copolyester film layer, the structural film layer and the laminate each shrink less than 5% in length and width upon exposure to boiling water for five seconds; and the laminate is thermoformable and its chloroform-soluble extractives meet the requirements of paragraph h(1) of 21 CFR § 177.1630 as defined herein.

A multilayer film suitable for sealing containers such as used for food packaging, and methods of making the film, are described. The film is particularly suitable for sealing containers made from polylactic acid (PLA). The multilayer film includes a) a substrate that includes a polymeric base layer; and b) on the substrate, a heatseal layer containing a PLA homopolymer or copolymer. The heatseal layer further includes dispersed therein an adhesion promoter, or alternatively the substrate further includes the adhesion promoter in a layer on a surface of the polymeric base layer between and adjacent the base layer and the heatseal layer. An antifog agent may also be included in the heatseal layer or on the surface of the heatseal layer opposite the substrate.

A tear resistant seal made from a recyclable multilayer structure that consists of an oriented polymer film layer a thermal bonding polymer layer on the oriented polymer layer inner surface substantially coextensive thereto, and a reinforcing scrim polymer layer also having an inner surface adjacent and substantially coextensive with the thermal bonding polymer layer. The polymer film layer and the bonding polymer layer are co-extruded layers having a chemical composition that permits recycling without separating the layers. The scrim layer also has a similar chemical composition, permitting recycling following lamination, thereby permitting the recovery of waste material during production runs by the simple recycling of the complete laminated structure.

A process for the production of a polymeric film comprising a copolyester having an acid component and a diol component, said acid component comprising a dicarboxylic acid and a sulfomonomer containing a sulfonate group attached to the aromatic nucleus of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, said process comprising the steps of: (i) melt-extruding a layer of said copolyester; (ii) stretching the extrudate in at least one direction; (iii) heat-setting the film by raising the temperature of the stretched film to a temperature T 1 in a first heating zone such that (T M -T 1 ) is in the range of from 5 to 30°C, and then raising the temperature of the film to a temperature T 2 in a second heating zone such that (T M -T 2 is in the range of from 0 to 10°C, wherein T M is the peak melting temperature of the polymeric film; wherein T 2 is greater than T 1 ; and wherein the times which a transverse section of the film spends in the first and second heating zones are defined by t 1 and t 2 , respectively, such that the ratio of t 1 to t 2 is at least 2:1; and a polymeric film obtainable thereby having an ultimate tensile strength at destruction in the range of 2 to 15 kgf/mm 2 in the machine direction and 2.5 to 17 kgf/mm 2 in the transverse direction.
