The method comprises forming a base anchoring element with a plurality of fastening elements and permanently attaching the base anchoring element to an existing article of footwear. The changeable items of design are made with fastening elements in registration with fastening elements of the base anchoring element. The base anchoring element and the changeable items of design are positioned on the footwear and configured, to resist aesthetic damage to the decorative elements during wearing use of the footwear.

A removable cover is provided for shoes, in particular, clogs. The removable cover assembly changes the aesthetic and functional qualities of the underlying shoe. The cover is attached by one or more clips which pass through a prior art clog, enabling a substitution of the cover for different uses or appearances. The cover is further attachable to an edge surface of a clog, or to a hinge structure of the clog.
