Abstract: alpha -Hydroxy- gamma -carboxymuconic acid- epsilon -semialdehyde dehydrogenase; a gene encoding this enzyme; a recombinant vector containing this gene and a transformant carrying this gene; and a process for producing the above enzyme and 2-pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylic acid by using the above transformant. Use of the transformant makes it possible to produce highly active alpha -hydroxy- gamma -carboxymuconic acid- epsilon -semialdehyde dehydrogenase in a large amount, which enables the industrial production of 2-pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylic acid.
