A thermal detection system comprises a temperature sensing element that includes an electro-optic (EO) material layer having a length axis and characterized by a temperature dependent index of refraction, an electrical mechanism for inducing a change in the index of refraction, a laser beam propagating lengthwise through EO layer for probing the refraction index change, and a light intensity meter for measuring a laser beam intensity change caused by the temperature dependent refraction index change. Thermal imaging is obtained by using a pixel array of such thermal sensing elements. The intensity reading may be done in either a cross-polarizer or a Mach Zehnder Interferometry reading configuration.

Semiconductor nano-particles, due to their specific physical properties, can be used as optical modulator and reversible photo-bleachable materials for a wide spectrum, from far infrared to deep U.V. In this patent, nano-particles are provided with control circuitry to form a programmable mask. The optical characteristics of the nano-particles change to provide patterned light. Such patterned light can be used for example to expose a photoresist on a semiconductor wafer for photolithography. Other applications include, reversible contrast enhancement layer (R-CEL) in optical lithography, lithography mask inspection and writing and optical storage technologies.

A re-configurable optical waveguide includes an electro-optic substrate and plurality of electrodes above substrate. Electrodes are forming photonic crystal waveguide with photonic crystal periodic structure which has a slab optical waveguide on the top surface of a substrate and also has refractive index variation areas due to electro-optical effect with a different refractive index from that of the core layer of the slab optical waveguide arranged in a lattice array shape at part of the slab optical waveguide. In this case, the refractive index variation areas are formed of the same material as the material constituting the core layer of the slab optical waveguide. The refractive index variation areas are arranged in the lattice array shape on both the sides of an optical waveguide area, where light is propagated. The refractive index of the core layers of the refractive index variation areas is larger than that of the core layer of an area of the refractive index variation area. A plurality of electrodes are placed a field emission array with structure density possibly being higher than 10+8 per square centimeter. Groups of the structures are united in pixels with size a equal to the waveguide's width. Different arrays of pixels form variable shapes and, appropriately, variable waveguides. Thus light propagates in the different directions according the waveguide which is formed. Such a waveguide allows implementation of different optical functions simply by changing the arrangement of the patterns. Arrangement of the patterns is controlled with integrated transistor structure, and with a coupled control circuit.

A compensated higher order waveplate is constructed of substrates. In one embodiment, a first substrate is a nlambda waveplate and the second substrate is a (n+ Delta )lambda waveplate. The substrates are oriented so that their principle axes of retardation are orthogonal. nlambda, is a base retardation of a waveplate and Delta lambda, is an incremental retardation. The incremental retardation produces a desired amount of retardation of a lightwave passing through the compensated higher order waveplate. Retarder material used to produce the base retardation is approximately ½ a desired thickness of the waveplate. Multiple waveplates are combined to produce any of wavelength band specific retarders and multiple non contiguous wavelength band specific retarders.

The invention relates to a pockels cell comprising two spaced-apart cuboidal RTP crystals (6, 7) that have a square cross section, are located one behind another, and are oriented towards each other so as to provide thermal compensation in the direction of radiation (5). Each of said RTP crystals (6, 7) is provided with electrodes (8, 9) on two opposite faces, said faces of one crystal being rotated by 90 relative to the faces of the other crystal and relative to the direction of radiation (5). Flexible, electrically insulating, high voltage-proof plastic mats (10) which conduct heat well and rest against the inside of a cooling member (13A, 13B) are provided around the exterior faces of the electrodes (8, 9).
