Recloseable packages for containing a product therein are provided that include a flexible container having a front side and a back side sealed together along at least one longitudinal seam and two lateral end seams, and a flexible film member having opposed ends permanently adhered to the flexible container. At least a portion of the flexible film member being configured to releasably secure between the permanently adhered opposed ends of the flexible film member one of the two lateral end seams of the flexible container subsequent to opening one of the two lateral end seams. Also disclosed are methods of fabricating and using the recloseable packages provided, as well as a flexible film for forming such packages.

The structure may comprise duffel bags, backpacks, shoe uppers, etc. The structure has a bottom panel with a first terminal bottom portion and a first end panel with a terminal end portion. As well, the first terminal bottom portion and the terminal end portion are affixed to each other in a flattened, two-dimensional arrangement by a variety of attachment methodologies including a thermoplastic elastomer strip. Two-dimensional construction saves time and helps to reduce manufacturing costs.

The machine and the method disclosed use a panel plastic film that is longitudinally folded into top and bottom halves before slitting along the fold. The halves are simultaneously transported ensuring print registration and requiring a single accumulator in the longitudinal direction. Side gusset pieces are inserted between the top and bottom halves through an initial gap enlarged by a pair of timing belts. The top and bottom halves partly sealed with the side gusset pieces are pulled away from each other and a means gives the ends of the side gusset pieces the shape of a rhomboid. Bottom gusset film is vertically sealed along the vertical axis of the rhomboid shaped ends of the side gusset pieces with the seal extending to the folded portions of the top and bottom halves. Longitudinal sealing and transverse sealing before cutting ensure sealing of the bottom gusset and side gussets.

A portion of the second sheet (24) defines a recloseable feature (623) located over an opening for reclosing the container (12). The second sheet (24) includes a line of reduced strength (653) at or adjacent at least a boundary adjacent the tucks and disposed between the opposing container walls (16) each having the sealed portion and an adjacent container wall (16). The second sheet (24) can include a hinge (28) about which the recloseable feature (653) pivots from closed position to open position.
