The present invention relates to a sealed flexible cartridge (1) , designed to be extracted under pressure, containing a substance for the preparation of a beverage, consisting of a first (3) and a second sheet (4) of circular, oval or polygonal shape which leave between them a space for the substance (2) and are welded together around their periphery (5), the first sheet (3) being made of a material chosen from filter paper, a non-woven and a semi-rigid material and the second sheet (4) being made of a material chosen from filter paper, a non-woven and a composite, in which the first sheet is such that it allows water at atmospheric pressure to pass through it or by piercing with a piercing means and the second sheet (4) is such that it allows water to pass through it only if an overpressure of between 0.1 and 3 bar is achieved during extraction from the said cartridge (1).

Packaging of ground coffee in the form of pastille, "dosette" or predosed bag (1) usable in espresso coffee machines, the pastille, the "dosette" or the predosed bag (1) being formed of filter-paper (3) which encloses the ground coffee (4). The ground coffee content (4) placed in the pastille or the like is partially or totally circonscribed, at its periphery, by means of at least one piece (6) of a sufficiently rigid material acting as a frame, so that said pastille or the like (1) has a good mechanical behaviour. A sealed flexible bag (1) designed for pressure extraction and containing at least one powdered substance for preparing a beverage. The bag consists of two identical, round, oval or polygonal flexible sheets (2, 3) defining therebetween a space for said powdered substance (5) and being sealed around their periphery (4) such that said bag is substantially symmetrical relative to its sealing plane. The material used for the sheets is impermeable to oxygen and steam and said bag may be used as in the provided extraction device.

A container 1 containing ground coffee 5 is provided with a side wall 7 and two end walls 9 and 11 which are made of sheets of filtering material. A rigid plastic foil 13, 15 made of biologically degradable material is sealed to the two end walls. This foil carries a multitude of local weakenings which are formed by recesses formed by means of a C0 2 laser. Around each weakening is situated a thickneing and/or strengthening of the foil. The foils are sealed with the side carrying the weakenings to the sheets of filtering material. Before this container can be used in an apparatus that is suitable for cooperation with cups, the container is first to be placed into an auxiliary container 3 open at both ends. This auxiliary container is provided with a rigid tapered side wall 17 so as to avoid liquid easily flowing to draining holes in the apparatus via the porous side wall along the outside of the container.

Also disclosed are processes for preparing a nutritional powder pod suitable for use in a beverage production machine. These processes include preparation of the nutritional powder by a process that includes extrusion.
