This invention provides liquid crystalline compounds, which are stable against heat, light and the like, can exhibit a nematic phase in a broad temperature range, have low viscosity, have proper optical anisotropy, and proper elastic constants K 33 and K 11 , wherein K 33 : bending modulus of elasticity and K 11 : splay modulus of elasticity, and further have a proper negative permittivity anisotropy and excellent compatibility with other liquid crystalline compounds. There are also provided a liquid crystalline composition using this liquid crystalline compound and a liquid crystal display element using this liquid crystalline composition. The liquid crystalline compounds are represented by formulae (a) to (b): (a) (b) (c) (d) wherein, for example, Ra and Rb each independently represent a straight chain alkyl or a straight chain alkoxy; rings A 1 , A 2 , B and C each independently represent trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; Z 11 , Z 12 , Z 2 , and Z 3 each independently represent a single bond or alkylene; and one of X 1 and X 2 represents fluorine and the other represents chlorine.

Abstract:
An aligning agent varnish for liquid crystals, which considerably influences especially the display characteristics of a liquid−crystal display element. It has improved properties so as to have an excellent total balance among liquid−crystal alignment properties, electrical properties, etc. It is characterized by containing a polyamic acid obtained from tetracarboxylic acids comprising as essential ingredients at least one tetracarboxylic acid having a tetracarboxylic acid residue represented by the formula (1) and cyclohexanetetracarboxylic dianhydride. A liquid−crystal display element produced with the aligning agent varnish, which contains the compound, eliminates the problems.

Thrombin derivatives having a lowered fibrinogen activity and anhydrothrombin derivatives having a lowered fibrinogen activity are provided. Namely, thrombin derivatives wherein carboxyl of thrombin is modified; and anhydrothrombin derivatives wherein carboxyl of anhydrothrombin is modified. Because of having a lowered affinity for fibrinogen, these thrombin derivatives are usable as platelet agglutination-inducing compositions and specific coagulation reaction reagents for clinical tests, etc. By affinity chromatography with the use of anhydrothrombin as a ligand bonded to carboxyl, blood coagulation factor VIII can be more selectively purified. The anhydrothrombin derivatives having modified carboxyl exert a sufficient antithrombotic effect in a smaller amount than conventional anhydrothrombin does, which makes them usable as thrombosis inhibitors.
