Abstract: A laser projection display comprises in sequence: a laser source; beam expansion and collimation optics; first and second ESBG arrays; a microdisplay; a projection lens; and a screen. Each ESBG array is recorded in a Holographic Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal sandwiched between transparent substrates patterned to provide a two-dimensional array of independently switchable ESBG pixels. Each ESBG pixel is characterized by a first unique speckle state under said first applied voltage and a second unique speckle state under said second applied voltage. Each ESBG pixel diffracts incident collimated light into an illumination patch in proximity to the active surface of said microdisplay.

Abstract: The invention provides an illuminator comprising a laser source and an Electrically Switchable Bragg Grating (ESBG) device disposed along the path of the beam emitted by said laser. The laser and ESBG form part of an apparatus for illuminating an electronic display to provide a viewable image. At least one viewable surface illuminated by laser light exhibits speckle. The ESBG device is configured to generate a time sequential set o f speckle cells by operating on one or both of the optical phase or ray-angular characteristics o incoming light. The optical characteristics of the ESBG are changed by applying a time varying electric field to the ESBG. A human eye observing the display integrates said speckle cells to provide an apparently de-speckled final image. The ESBG device may be characterised as a variable diffractive axicon, a variable sub-wavelength grating or a variable diffractive diffuser. The ESBG device may comprise similarly characterised first and second gratings disposed in series. The laser source and ESBG device may be two-dimensional arrays.

Abstract: A display device comprises red, green, and blue laser sources; a Spatial Light Modulator (SLM) comprising at least one diffraction grating recorded in an electrically variable refractive index material; a control circuit coupled; an image generator; and a light stop. The SLM is illuminated with red light at a first angle, green light at a second angle and blue light at a third angle which defines a viewing direction. Diffracted red and green light and undiffracted blue light emerges from the SLM in the viewing direction. Undiffracted red and green light and diffracted blue light are blocked by the stop after emerging from the SLM. In one embodiment the SLM comprises one Bragg grating which diffracts red and green light into the viewing direction and blue light away from the viewing direction. In another embodiment the SLM comprises superimposed red, green and blue diffracting Bragg gratings.
