Abstract: Described herein is a process that converts an ash source such as, for example, a manure ash source to granules with increased nutrient solubility and phosphorus (P) content. In one aspect, the process involves admixing an ash source with a phosphorous-based acid to produce the granules. The granulated composition produced by the methods described herein have good packing properties and, thus, are easy to transport and apply as a fertilizer. The granular compositions produced herein can be readily used in conventional fertilizer equipment, mixes, and systems.

Abstract: Aspects of triboelectric fibers and methods of manufacture of the fibers are described. In one example, a method of manufacture of a fiber for generating energy using the triboelectric effect includes forming a preform tube, heating the preform tube in a furnace, feeding a wire through the preform tube and the furnace during the heating, and pulling the wire through the furnace to form a fiber. The methods described herein can be relied upon to manufacture fibers long enough for industrial-scale textile manufacturing, including for use with industrial-scale looms. In one example, forming the preform tube can include providing a polypropylene tube and wrapping the polypropylene tube with a housing layer of amorphous film, such as acrylic film. The acrylic film can be relied upon to maintain the form and integrity of the polypropylene as the wire is pulled, and the acrylic film can be easily removed after the pulling.

Abstract: The disclosure provide compounds of Formula I and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof. The variables, R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , X 1 , X 2 , and Z are defined herein. Certain compounds of Formula I act as selective mitochondrial protonophore uncouplers that do not affect the plasma membrane potential. Compounds and salts of Formula I are useful for treating or decreasing the risk of conditions responsive to mitochondrial uncoupling, such as cancer, obesity, type II diabetes, fatty liver disease, insulin resistance, Parkinson's disease, ischemia reperfusion injury, heart failure, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NALFD), and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Because mitochondrial uncouplers decrease the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are known to contribute to age-related cell damage, compounds of Formula I are useful for increasing lifespan. Compounds and salts of Formula I are also useful for regulating glucose homeostasis or insulin action in a patient.

Abstract: Described herein are water desalination membranes and methods of desalinating water. Sulfonated poly(arylene ether) polymers are also disclosed, including those comprising one or more sulfonate groups at various points along the polymer chain. The polymers may be used as at least a portion of a water desalination membrane. The polymers described herein are useful for preventing transport of aqueous ionic species (e.g., Na+ and Cl-) across a membrane made from the polymers while allowing water to pass. Chlorine-stable polymers are described, as well as polymers exhibiting good performance for rejecting monovalent cations in the presence of polyvalent cations.
