Abstract:
Metal-ceramic composites of aluminum or aluminum alloy materials, having discrete finely dispersed particles of ceramic materials such as TiB2, provide strengthened and hardened materials having improved fatigue, elongation, and elastic modulus characteristics.
Abstract:
A fiber optic rotation rate sensor employs two fiber loop interferometers. Two Sagnac fiber optic interferometers are interleaved such that both fibers are contained in each interferometer. A coherent light beam at one frequency is propagated in only one of the fibers, and an optical beam at another frequency is propagated in the other fiber. The beam emerging from one of the fibers is combined with the beam emerging from the other of the fibers for each of the two ends of each fiber to produce a pair of interference signals each having a frequency equal to the difference between the two light beam frequencies. The relative phase of these two signals is then determined to provide an indication of the rate of angular rotation of the fiber optic loops, and this determination is independent of any temperature-related characteristics that produce offset phase errors.
Abstract:
A specific combination of components having unique properties both in composition and benefits. Such a combination has been found in alkali or alkaline earth metal nitrates, alkanolamines and alkali or alkaline earth metal thiocyanates. In such combinations it has also been found that alkaline and alkali earth thiosulfates and chlorides below the concentration level where corrosion is promoted may advantageously be substituted for all or part of the thiocyanates and that diethanolamine, N,N-di(hydroxyethyl)glycine (bicine) and N,N-di(hydroxyethyl)- beta -aminopropionic acid (DAPA) and certain alkanolamines and alkanolamino acids and derivatives may advantageously be substituted for all or part of the triethanolamine.
Abstract:
Electrolytic reduction cells for aluminum production wherein tiles have been placed upon the cathode surfaces to improve the cell operation. These tiles have aluminum-wettable surfaces, which reduce electrical losses and increase cathode life. The tiles are produced from a mixture of refractory hard metal (RHM), a thermosetting resin, carbonaceous fillers and carbonaceous additives. The tiles are physically formed, polymerized and/or cross linked, and carbonized to form a tile which can be inserted into a cell. The tile may have the RHM homogeneously dispersed throughout the tile structure, or it may have the RHM concentrated in layered form.
Abstract:
A magnetically actuated valve (10) which includes a one-piece valve body (16, 80), a linearly translatable poppet (24, 98) for selectively blocking an aperture in the valve body, a magnetically operable rotor (28), a magnetic collar (38) or electromagnetic coil (42) external to the valve body for inducing rotation of the rotor, and a screw and nut arrangement (48) for converting rotational motion of the rotor (28) into linear motion of the poppet (24, 98).
Abstract:
Aluminum cells may be provided having cathode surfaces which are wetted by aluminum, said surfaces comprising Refractory Hard Materials in a non-graphitized carbon matrix. Such cells may utilize inclined or drained cathodes as well as non-consumable anodes. The resinous binder system utilized in the surface coating material is characterized by a char yield greater than 25 percent, while the coating composition exhibits expansion characteristics such as to adhere to a cathode block at temperatures up to and including those normally encountered in the operation of an aluminum cell. The ablation rate of the carbon system utilized is essentially equal to the combined wear and dissolution rate of the Refractory Hard Material in an aluminum cell environment.
Abstract:
A coating composition comprising Refractory Hard Material, thermosetting resinous binder, mix liquid, carbonaceous filler, and carbonaceous additive is cured at a temperature below about 250 C, and carbonized at a temperature insufficient to effect graphitization of said resinous binder, so as to produce an aluminum wettable cathode coating having Refractory Hard Material in a non-graphitized carbon matrix.

A deployable truss which includes at least one foldable module (10). Each module (10) includes two fixed frames (12, 14), two gate assemblies (16, 18), two base members (20, 22) and diagonal braces (50, 52, 54, 56) which are arranged for folding compactly. Foldable panels (58, 60) can also be attached to the module. The truss can include multiple modules sharing common fixed frames (12, 14) or common gate assemblies (16, 18).
