Abstract: A top connection and sub that provides a reliable electrical connection between a perforating gun and a power charge for more reliable electrically ignited power charges in perforating gun strings. An example embodiment may include an electrical top connector assembly including a housing with a first end and a second end with a distal protrusion, the distal protrusion having a hollow opening adapted to receive a power charge and at least one locking mechanism for locking to the end of a power charge, wherein the first end is adapted to be coupled to a perforating gun and the second end is adapted to couple to a setting tool, and the distal protrusion is adapted to twist and lock to a power charge, a contact assembly comprising a contact housing with a contact rod disposed therein and insulated from the contact housing, a retainer nut containing a feed thru contact pin, slideably disposed within the retainer nut and electrically coupled to the contact rod with a spring.

Abstract: A setting tool for a downhole tool includes a setting housing, a setting assembly, and an integrated igniter. The setting housing has a passage therethrough. The setting assembly is positioned in the passage, and includes a drive portion and a deployment portion. The drive portion has an elongate body with a propellant chamber. The deployment portion has an opening defining a drive cavity shaped to slidingly receive an end of the drive portion. The deployment portion includes a deployment end connectable to the downhole component. The integrated igniter is positioned in the propellant chamber, and includes an integrator housing, an internal propellant, and a switch assembly connected to the internal propellant. Upon triggering the switch, the internal propellant is ignited to release an ignition fluid under ignition pressure to move the deployment portion and the downhole component connected thereto to an activated position.

Abstract: An igniter for activating a downhole component of a downhole tool includes an igniter housing, a switch assembly, and a propellant. The igniter is positionable in the downhole tool, and includes an igniter portion and a nose portion. The igniter portion has a switch chamber therein. The nose portion has a propellant opening therethrough. The switch assembly is positioned in the switch chamber, and includes a switch movable between an untriggered and a triggered position. The propellant is supported by the nose portion. The propellant is connected to the switch and is ignitable thereby when the switch is moved to the triggered position whereby the propellant releases a pressurized fluid through the propellant opening to activate the downhole component.

Abstract: Provided is a detonation interrupt device. The detonation interrupt device, in one aspect, includes a first detonation train member positioned within a housing, and a mechanical member positioned proximate the first detonation train member. In this aspect, the mechanical member is movable between a first position physically separating the first detonation train member from a second detonation train member and thereby preventing the first detonation train member from detonating the second detonation train member, and a second position not physically separating the first detonation train member from the second detonation train member and thereby allowing the first detonation train member to detonate the second detonation train member, wherein the mechanical member is configured to automatically move from the first position to the second position as the housing and the second detonation train member move linearly with respect to each other.

Abstract: A detonator to activate energetic materials in downhole well environments that can be transported and operated safely. The detonator comprises a switch coupled to a power source and the energetic materials. The power source may or may not be a part of the detonator. The switch creates a default closed switch between the power source and the energetic material. The switch can communicate with an actuator in response to engaging a gun assembly. The switch can create an open switch in response to communicating with the actuator. The switch forms a short circuit when configured to the default closed switch and forms an open circuit when configured to the open switch. The energetic material is activated in response to the mechanical switch forming an open switch and power is provided by the power source.

Abstract: A perforating gun assembly includes an exposed perforating gun module. The exposed perforating gun module includes a housing having a first connector end, a second connector end opposite and spaced apart from the first connector end, and a chamber extending along a central axis of the housing between the first and second connector ends. The chamber is configured for receiving a detonator and optionally, a radial booster charge coupled to the detonator. A plurality of sockets extends from an outer surface of the housing towards the chamber. Each socket is configured to receive an encapsulated shaped charge. The encapsulated shaped charges may include a protrusion having an external thread that threadingly engage a complimentary threaded portion of the sockets. The detonator may directly initiate the radial booster charge or the encapsulated shaped charges.
