Abstract:
A method for obtaining particulate calcium carbonate exhibiting improved brightness and color and having uniformity of size such that when the particles are formed in the causticization process in a kraft pulp mill, the time required to separate the particles from liquors in which they are suspended is minimized and the amount of liquor recovered is maximized, with minimal dilution by water used for washing. The method includes the steps of a) slaking calcium oxide in water or an alkaline liquor containing as dissolved species predominantly sodium hydroxide; b) mixing the slaked lime with green liquor from a kraft pulping process to complete a causticization reaction that produces white liquor and lime mud; c) separating the lime mud from the white liquor; and d) milling a portion of the lime mud for use as a white mineral pigment in applications where such pigments are typically used.
Abstract:
A lance nozzle insert for a refractory lance for feeding an additive wire into a quantity of molten metal below the surface of the molten metal surface is made of a material comprising stabilized zirconium oxide and graphite substantially increasing the corrosion resistance of the lance nozzle insert.
Abstract:
A method of a method for measuring wear in the lining of a metallurgical melting vessel such as a steel converter, by a laser scanner. A laser having a contouring system on a cart can be moved between measurements. The laser contouring system references three permanent marks behind the cart and two temporary marks positioned near the vessel. The distances from the movable cart to each of the five marks is determined during an initial measurement by the contouring system. Every time the cart is moved and a new measurement is taken, the contouring system scans the vessel and the two temporary marks but not the permanent marks .
Abstract:
An articulated hinge is provided which is capable of supporting a panel member and permitting the panel member to be moved away from an opening and at the same time permit the panel member to be rotated approximately 90 degrees. The hinge has a scissor arm mechanism which provides for smooth opening and closing of the hinge thereby eliminating a possible sticking of the hinge during opening.
Abstract:
A method of blending a fine precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) filler with larger PCC, the resulting blend to be used alone or in conjunction with a ground carbonate, clay or other filler, resulting in improved porosity by the lowering of the porosity of supercalendered paper, thereby imparting improved and offset printability. The fine PCC can be ultrafine PCC filler which then is blended with other fillers including but not limited to pigments. These fillers which are blended with the fine PCC include commercial and experimental PCC and commercial clays. Ultrafine PCC has agglomerates of small, discrete particles. Ultrafine PCC for use in the invention has a specific surface area of about 20 m2/g as measured by BET gas adsorption. As measured by a sedigraph, the average size of these agglomerates is from 0.4 to 1.1 microns.
Abstract:
In a method and system for measuring wear in the lining of a vessel by a laser contouring system having an electromagnetic radiation emitting and receiving device. The laser contouring system references permanent marks and temporary marks positioned outside, on, or within the vessel. The distances and direction from the electromagnetic radiation emitting and receiving device to the fixed and temporary marks is determined during an initial measurement by the electromagnetic radiation emitting and receiving device from a first scanning position. The electromagnetic radiation emitting and receiving device is then moved along a path from the first scanning position to a second scanning position wherein some of the marks which were scanned from the first scanning position are scanned again to determine the relative position of the vessel and points on the internal lining of the vessel to determine the contour of the lining.
Abstract:
A process and apparatus for feeding an additive to a molten metal in a vessel to achieve a uniform dispersion of the additive are provided. In one example, the outlet of the lance is positioned below the surface of the molten metal. The lance is moved with a reciprocating motion, so that the outlet of the lance moves below the surface of the molten metal. The additive is dispensed through the outlet of the lance along a path traversed by the outlet in the molten metal while the lance reciprocates.
Abstract:
A high solids precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) suspension and method for producing the suspension are provided, with the PCC having a PCC particle size distribution d 90 value of about 0.7 microns or less, a PCC particle size distribution d 50 value of about 0.4 microns or less, a PCC particle size distribution d 90 /d 50 ratio of from about 1.2 to about 2.2 and a PCC specific surface area of about 10.0 meters squared per gram or greater.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a load floor latch for securing a first closure member to a second closure member. When the first and second closure members are fastened, the latch is opened by actuating a handle and a pawl supported on the housing is rotated away from a keeper on the second closure member by the actuation of the pawl by the handle.
Abstract:
A method for reducing tundish and ladle nozzle clogging in a steel making process by introducing an additive into molten steel containers used in steel making at predetermined times. The additives introduced are oxides of iron which contain between 10% and 30% of oxygen by weight. By adding the oxides of iron in a controlled manner using a cored wire apparatus, clogs in tundish or ladle nozzles in the steel making process are avoided and the steel flows more smoothly with less interruptions due to clogged nozzles. A preferred embodiment uses oxides of iron contained in a cored wire which can be introduced at a predetermined rate and readily mix with molten steel, provide better distribution of dissolved oxygen in the steel to oxidize inclusions, and facilitate removal of the inclusions before the inclusions can cause nozzle clogging.
