Abstract: According to the invention reference values are generated from the output signals of a detector. A sliding mean (comparison value) is calculated from a large number of reference values. Depending on the amplitude distribution of the reference values around the comparison value a diagnosis of the function of the detector is carried out. If a malfunction is detected an error message is transmitted to the driver and an emergency operating mode is initiated for the internal combustion engine.
