The invention relates to a compound of Formula (I): wherein: each of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 , R 6 and R 7 which may be the same or different on each triarylamine unit of Formula (1) and the same or different from one triarylamine unit of Formula (1) to another is independently hydrogen or an optionally substituted substituent; n is from 5 to 20; and a and b are each independently 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4. Also claimed are compositions comprising a compound of Formula (1) and a synthetic organic polymer resin, a process for preparing a compound of Formula (1), an organic semiconducting layer prepared from the composition, and electronic devices comprising the organic semiconducting layer.

There is provided a process for the hydrogenation of esters of alpha-substituted carboxylic acids which comprises reacting an ester of an alpha-substituted carboxylic acid with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst under substantially homogeneous supercritical conditions. Preferably, the ester of an alpha-substituted carboxylic acids is an ester of formula (1): wherein: R 1 and R 2 are each independently an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group or an optionally substituted heterocyclic group; and Y is a heteroatom or an optionally substituted heteroatom group. More preferably, the ester of an alpha-substituted is carboxylic acids is an ester of formula (2): wherein: R 3 is an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group or an optionally substituted heterocyclic group; R 4 and R 5 are each independently hydrogen, an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group or an optionally substituted heterocyclic group; Y is a heteroatom or an optionally substituted heteroatom group; Q is a functional group; and n 1. A process for making an electronic device comprising a dielectric substrate laminated with an electrically conductive metal or alloy which comprises applying a non-aqueous etch-resistant ink by ink jet printing to selected areas of the metal or alloy, exposing the etch-resistant ink to actinic radiation and/or particle beam radiation to effect polymerisation, removing exposed metal or alloy by a chemical etching process and then removing the polymerised etch-resistant ink by alkali wherein the etch-resistant ink is substantially solvent free and comprises the components: A) 30 to 90 parts acrylate functional monomers free from acid groups comprising mono or higher functionality wherein 5 - 95% by weight is one or more monofunctional monomers; B) 1 to 30 parts acrylate functional monomer containing one or more acid groups; C) 0 to 20 parts polymer or prepolymer; D) 0 to 20 parts radical initiator; E) 0 to 5 parts colorant; F) 0 to 5 parts surfactant; and wherein the ink has a viscosity of not greater than 30 cPs (mPa.s) at 40°C and all parts are by weight.

A process is provided for the solid-phase synthesis of a peptide amide which comprises attaching a α-nitrogen protected Cα-carboxamide amino acid to a solid support by its side chain, removing the α-nitrogen protecting group, assembling a peptide chain on said α-nitrogen and then cleaving the assembled peptide amide from the solid support. Novel amino acid analogues, peptide amides and solid-phase supports are also provided.

A process for forming a chain extended thermoplastic polymer which comprises reacting: (i) a prepolymer comprising one or more guanidinium or biguanidinium units and having at least one reactive end group; and (ii) a chain extender having at least two groups able to react with reactive end group(s) in (i). The polymers may be used as fixing agents to reduce highlighter smear of prints prepared by ink jet printing.

A coating composition comprising pigment, medium and a binder characterised in that (i) the binder comprises a cationic polymer comprising a repeat unit of formula (I): wherein: X and Y are the same or different and represent divalent organic linking groups; and (ii) the weight ratio of pigment to binder in the composition is at least 2:1. The compositions are useful for preparing ink jet recording materials with good water resistance, print quality and dry time.
