Abstract: Apparatus for and methods of obtaining positional information about one or more objects in a detection field are disclosed. An array including a transmitting element and a plurality of receiving elements is provided. In one aspect a truncated cross-correlation function is applied to determine the interval between signals received by a plurality of the receiving elements, thereby to determine an angular position of an object. In another aspect a warning zone is defined and it is determined whether an object is within the warning zone. Also disclosed are techniques for stretching received signals, and techniques for obtaining positional information relating to an object using non-Doppler radar. Various implementations, modifications and applications of the techniques described are disclosed. Typical applications of the techniques described are with vehicles.

Abstract: A time domain reflectometry probe for fluid level measurement has a first portion which is vertical and a second portion which is horizontal. The horizontal portion has greater resolution than the vertical portion to give increased accuracy over a region of the measurement range. The first and second portions can also be at acute angles to the vertical and horizontal respectively.

Abstract: A radar system adapted to be installed on a vehicle (1) is operable to detect objects in different fields of view of the system. The system has transceiver means (2, 3; 44, 46) for transmitting a radar signal and receiving the signal after the latter has been reflected from an object to be detected. A reflected signal is sampled by sampling means (12; 66) during a succession of sampling periods each of which is delayed with respect to a corresponding portion of the transmitted signal. The gating of the reflected signal effectively generates range shells, each of which corresponds to the time taken for a transmitted signal to reach an object at the shell, and to be reflected back to the system and is hence related to the delay between the transmission of the signal and the corresponding sampling period. The range shells define the field of view of the system, which can be changed by altering said delay. Such alterations are carried out under the control of control means which is connected to sensor means for detecting a property of the operation of the vehicle, determining a required positon of the field of view, and setting the field of view of the system accordingly. The range shell positions, and hence fields of view, can also be changed by selecting alternative transmitters and/or receivers of the transceiver means. There is also shown a motor road vehicle which has a radar system comprising a pair of transmitter antennas at two alternate corner regions of the vehicle and a pair of cooperating receiver antennas of the other two corner regions. Certain embodiments of the system also have the facility to generate range shells which are swept over an area around the vehicle or which track detected objects.

Abstract: A motor road vehicle collision warning system (1) comprising an obstacle sensing system (3), comprising a plurality of sensors (5) together capable of sensing obstacles in any direction around the vehicle (7) wherein each of said plurality of sensors (5) has a predetermined field of view (9) in which it is capable of detecting obstacles and an instantaneous field of view (10, 11), within which obstacles sensed by the sensor causes the obstacles sensing system (3) to generate an obstacle signal, a vehicle operation sensing means (13) for detecting at least one property of the vehicles operation, a zone of concern control means (15) for defining a zone of concern (17) within which sensed obstacles trigger the generation of an obstacle of concern signal whereby the zone of concern (17) is defined in dependence on the property or properties of the vehicles operation sensed by the vehicle operation sensing means (13), and for controlling the sensors such that the instantaneous field of view of the sensors (5) together cover the zone of concern (17) and a warning control system (19) for receiving said obstacle of concern signals and for determining whether a collision warning signal should be generated.
