    Abstract: An event related optical signal, EROS, neuroimaging and analysis system for monitoring activity of a subject's brain, the system comprising: one or more light sources each configured to emit modulated light; light detection circuitry comprising a light detector, the light detection circuitry configured to output a detection radio frequency, RF, signal based on light incident on a detection surface of the detector; an analogue RF mixer having: a first port connected to one or more local oscillators, LOs, to receive one or more LO electrical RF signals therefrom; a second port connected to the light detection circuitry to receive the detection RF signal therefrom, wherein the analogue RF mixer is configured to mix the LO RF signal and the detection RF signal to obtain a mixed RF signal, and the analogue RF mixer further comprises a third port configured to output the mixed RF signal; and wherein the system further comprises a controller configured to provide neuroimaging and analysis based on a phase of the mixed RF signal.

    Abstract: An event related optical signal, EROS, neuroimaging and analysis system for monitoring activity of a subject's brain, the system comprising: a first wavelength-swept light source configured to provide wavelength-swept emission of coherent light; and a plurality of light detectors; wherein the first wavelength-swept light source is arranged to both: (i) deliver the light towards the subject's brain tissue to be scattered to the detectors, and (ii) deliver the light to each of the detectors via one or more reference channels; wherein each of the light detectors comprises: a first input port arranged to receive scattered light from the subject's brain tissue; a second input port coupled to one of the reference channels to receive reference light from the first light source; a light combiner connected to both the first input port and the second input port for combining the scattered light received from the subject's brain tissue with the reference light received from the reference channel to provide a combined light signal comprising a component at a beat frequency for the scattered and reference light; and signal processing circuitry configured to provide neuroimaging and analysis based on the combined light signal.

    Abstract: A method of preparing a neuroimaging system for neuroimaging and analysis of a subject's brain tissue, the neuroimaging system comprising a plurality of optical elements, wherein each optical element comprises one of: (i) a light source for emitting light towards the subject's brain tissue, or (ii) a light detector for detecting scattered light from the subject's brain tissue, the method comprising: placing optical elements on the subject's scalp to provide at least one source-detector pair where a light source on the subject's scalp is arranged to emit light towards the subject's brain tissue and a detector on the subject's scalp is arranged to detect scattered light from the subject's brain tissue which was emitted from that light source; wherein placing an optical element on the subject's scalp comprises: first, arranging said optical element at a selected location on the subject's scalp for providing at least one source-detector pair; and then, performing an iterative optical element arrangement adjustment process comprising: obtaining a measurement signal indicative of a goodness of fit for said optical element as arranged on the subject's scalp; and re-arranging said optical element at, or proximal to, the selected location on the subject's scalp based on the indication of goodness of fit for said optical element; wherein said iterative optical element arrangement adjustment process is repeated until a said measurement signal indicates a goodness of fit for said optical element which satisfies a threshold criterion.

    Abstract: The disclosure provides brain tissue acousto-optic apparatus and methods. The apparatus comprises an optical source (201) configured to emit light towards a target volume (250) containing brain tissue of a living subject, an optical detector (202) configured to detect light from the target volume, and an ultrasound source (203) arranged to provide an ultrasound field of spatially varying ultrasound amplitude in the target volume. The ultrasound field is arranged to modify the optical path length of light (212, 214) passing through the target volume (250), and to define a plurality of regions (210a-210f) in the target volume (250), wherein each region (210a-210f) provides a unique modification of the optical path length (212, 214).
