Abstract: A method of producing a sheet article or other elongated product of solution heat treated aluminum alloy substantially free of permanent thermal distortion. The method comprises subjecting an article made of a heat-treatable aluminum alloy to a solution heat treatment at a solutionizing temperature to dissolve soluble precipitates present in the alloy, cooling the article from the solutionizing temperature to an upper critical temperature below which precipitation of second phase particles may occur and further cooling the article to a lower critical temperature below which precipitation of the second phase particles many no longer occur, the cooling taking place between the upper and lower critical temperatures at a rate of cooling fast enough to avoid significant precipitation from the alloy, and optionally additionally cooling the article to a temperature below the lower critical temperature. The further cooling of the article is carried out such that the cooling rate increases as the cooling progresses.

Abstract: There is provided a method of texturing a metal sheet or strip (8), which method comprises a plurality oF sequential texturing passes each of which is performed by passing the sheet or strip (8) between at least one pair of rollers (7), wherein at least one of each pair of rollers (7) has a textured pattern on the surface thereof and the textured patterns is transferred to the sheet or strip (8) during each texturing pass, and wherein the textured surface on the sheet or strip (8) resulting from each pass overlaps with that from the one or more other passes to form a final textured pattern. There is also provided an apparatus for texturing a metal sheet or strip (8).

Abstract: Improved work roll, particularly for use in closed gap rolling, has a composite structure comprising a cylindrical outer layer (14) made of steel, and providing the work surface of the roll, separated from a steel core (12) by an intermediate layer (13) of material having a low Young's modulus. Typically the Young's modulus of the intermediate layer (13) is in the range 1 GPa to 10 GPa and may, for example, be rubber or plastics material, or a hardenable material such as adhesive. The radial thickness of the intermediate layer (13) is quite low - less than 5 mm and preferably less than 1 mm. Provided that the dimensions of the outer layer (14) and intermediate layer (13) are chosen appropriately, this combination can realise a work roll having an effective Young's modulus which is lower than that of steel whilst at the same time retaining the advantages of a steel work surface and enabling higher rolling speeds.
