Abstract: Methods are disclosed for stimulating asynchronous and stochastic neural activity in a subject in need thereof. In some embodiments, the methods are used to provide asynchronous and stochastic neural activity in a limb of a subject with an amputation of the limb, for example, in a method of controlling the prosthetic limb of the subject.

Abstract: Disclosed are highly compliant bioelectronic neural interface devices with hydrogel adhesion. Example devices include adhesion-promoting functional groups that facilitate enhanced electrical contact with the nerve without the need for continuous application of pressure. A transfer process may be used to fabricate the device using a sacrificial material (e.g., polyacrylic acid (PAA)) that has tunable solubility in aqueous media, helping avoid the need for harsher release chemicals that may affect the properties of the hydrogel. The transfer process also helps achieve electrode contacts that are flush with a surface of the device and facilitate more intimate contact with the nerve. A gradual change in Young's modulus from a stiff contact pad region to a more compliant electrode contact region may be achieved via a varied amount of an epoxy-based material (such as SU-8) and with silicone-based material (such as polydimethylsiloxame (PDMS)) to encapsulate the device cable.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods for treating impairment of a limb in a subject. Particular methods comprise applying a therapeutically effective amount of an electrical stimulus to dorsal roots, dorsal rootlets, or dorsal root ganglia, of sensory neurons innervating the limb of the subject, wherein the impairment is a motor impairment and/or a proprioception impairment due to neurological disorder or injury, the electrical stimulus is applied with one or more electrodes controlled by a neurostimulator, and the one or more electrodes are implanted in the epidural space at the dorsolateral aspect of the spinal cord and proximate to the dorsal roots or dorsal rootlets of the sensory neurons innervating the limb of the subject, or the one or more electrodes are implanted proximate to dorsal root ganglia of sensory neurons innervating the limb of the subject.
