There is described a method for controlling the quality of printed documents (1 ), such as banknotes and other similar documents, in an environment where only part of the surface of the printed documents is available for inspection, the method comprising the steps of (i) storing a reference image (6); (ii) acquiring a sample image (5) of a sample printed document to be controlled, which sample image covers only a limited portion of the sample printed document; (iii) selecting a search pattern (7) within the acquired sample image; (iv) searching the reference image (6) for a match with the selected search pattern (7), (v) determining control parameters linked to the position of the search pattern (7) within said sample image (5) and within said reference image (6), (vi) comparing the control parameters linked to the position of the search pattern (7) within the sample image (5) with the control parameters linked to the position of the search pattern (7) within the reference image (6); and (vii) based on the results of the comparison of the control parameters, accepting or rejecting the sample printed document.

There is described a method for controlling the position of numbering wheels (7) of a numbering device (1 ), which numbering device (1 ) is of the type comprising a plurality of independently-driven numbering wheels (7) disposed adjacent to one another for rotation about a common rotation axis, the method comprising actuating the numbering wheels (7) between successive numbering iterations, whereby each numbering wheel (7) which has to be rotated to a new target position is driven into rotation until it reaches its new target position. The method further comprises, at least during actuation of the numbering wheels (7), compensating for external factors acting on the numbering wheels (7), such as friction induced by adjacent rotating numbering wheels, by electronically regulating the position of each numbering wheel (7) which is not rotated or which has reached its new target position. There is described a process for numbering substrates having security prints printed thereon, each of the substrates comprising a plurality of security prints which are arranged in k columns and n rows on the substrate, wherein product k*n is an integer multiple of ten or of twenty-five. The process comprises the step of numbering successive runs of 10 N substrates each, by providing each of the security prints with a serial number Serial#, the serial number Serial# being calculated with the formula: Serial# = Start# + a*[(r - 1 )*k*n*10 N + ((i - 1 )*n + (j - 1 ))*10 N + MOD(s - 1 ; 10 N )], where Start# is a starting number from which numbering starts, a is equal to -1 or +1 depending on whether numbering is carried out downwards or, respectively upwards, r identifies the run of 10N successive substrates, i and j respectively identify the column and the row on the substrate where the security print to be numbered is located, s is a number which identifies the substrate onto which the security print to be numbered is located and MOD(x; y) designates the so-called modulus function which returns the integer remainder of the division of y by x. Digits N+2 and N+1 of the serial number Serial# are produced by sequential actuation of a double numbering wheel (13, 14) bearing a predetermined sequence of digit pairs for digits N+2 and N+1. Also described are numbering boxes to carry out the numbering process.

There is described process for producing security papers, in particular banknotes, comprising the step of sealing the surface of the security papers by applying a protective pattern on the surface of the security paper, which sealing comprising printing the security papers by intaglio printing using an intaglio printing plate with engraved areas such that at least 80% of the whole surface of each security paper is covered with embossed intaglio patterns produced by engraved areas of the intaglio printing plate which are inked or with a combination of embossed intaglio patterns and flat intaglio patterns, which flat intaglio patterns are produced by unengraved areas of the intaglio printing plate which are inked after wiping of the intaglio printing plate, at least a part of the embossed intaglio patterns and/or flat intaglio patterns being printed with a transparent or semi-transparent intaglio ink. The transparent or semi-transparent intaglio ink is applied in engraved areas and/or unengraved areas of the intaglio printing plate so as to seal substantially the whole surface of the security papers with a protective pattern composed of intaglio patterns. Also described are intaglio printing presses for implementing the said process and the resulting security papers.

There is described an apparatus (1) for coating a cylinder (C), in particular a wiping cylinder of an intaglio printing press, with a plastic composition comprising inter alia a blade mechanism (4) comprising a single substantially planar blade (40) with a straight edge (40a) extending along the full length of the cylinder to be coated and which is mounted rotatably about an axis parallel to the axis of rotation of the cylinder to be coated. The blade comprises, at its terminal end proximate to the cylinder, an inclined end portion (4a) having an inverted-V shape rising from the upper side of the blade, the top edge of the inclined end portion forming the straight edge of the blade. The blade is adapted to be rotated so that the straight edge of the blade undergoes an upward movement substantially tangential to the periphery of the cylinder in order to discontinue the application of the plastic composition onto the surface of the cylinder.

The temperature sensing system (9) is adapted to output a temperature measurement profile (T m ) representative of the surface temperature of the cylinder measured along the length of the cylinder, the temperature measurement profile being subdivided into a plurality of zones (Z1 to Z8) each associated to one corresponding column of heating elements (60a to 6Oh). Operation of each column of heating elements (60a to 6Oh) is controlled by the processing unit on the basis of the surface temperature measured within at least one of the zones (Z1 to Z8).

According to this method, each stack (1) of sheets is processed into M successive bundle groups (3*) of N individual bundles (3) each and these M successive bundle groups (3*) are stored in M separate storage areas (11), which storage areas (11) are vertically superposed, whereby each one of the M successive bundle groups (3*) is stored in a predetermined one of the M separate storage areas (11). Subsequent stacks (1) of sheets are processed, whereby each one of the M successive bundle groups (3*) processed from said subsequent stacks (1 ) of sheets is piled in the same predetermined one of said M separate storage areas (11) as the first stack (1) of sheets. When K stacks (1) of sheets have been processed, each storage area (11) contains a complete set (4*) of N bundle packs (4) of K bundles (3) each. There is also described a bundle collating system (10) for collecting the bundles (3) processed according to the above collating method.
