Novel, psychrotrophic rhizobacteria which are capable of promoting emergence and vigour of seedlings when applied to the growth environment of the seed. Accordingly, the invention further comprises application of these bacteria to enhance emergence of agricultural crops particularly, although not exclusively, in those geographical areas where cold climates retard growing seasons. Rhizobacterial species identified herein include Serratia liquefaciens, Pseudomonas putida including biovar B, P. fluorescens, Enterobacter aerogenes and a strain tentatively designated Beijerinckia indica.
