Abstract:
A machine which can be used by a player practising a ball game such as tennis or badminton has an ejection mechanism comprising a pair of revolving discs (1a, 1b) spaced apart by a gap (2) through which can be drawn a ball (4) for ejection in a direction (3) which can be determined by appropriate adjustment of the vertical and horizontal positioning of the revolving discs by means of inclination drive (10) and sweep gear (12). Side spin or slice can be imparted to the ball by rotation of the revolving discs about an axis lying in the direction (3) of the ball ejection, whilst top spin or under spin can be imparted to the ball by varying the angular velocity of the discs (1a, 1b) by causing them to rotate at differing speeds. The ejection mechanism may be mounted on a height adjusting mechanism in order to vary the height at which the ball is ejected. The machine can be controlled by a microprocessor-based system which may be pre-programmed or operated by remote control.
Abstract:
The invention relates to spiro compounds having central and peripheral nervous system activity, for example muscarinic agonist activity, having formulae (I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII and IX) and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts, quaternary compounds which are structurally derived from said compounds having a tertiary nitrogen atom, enantiomers and racemates, wherein ring A together with the spiro-carbon atom constitutes a bridged or unbridged ring containing one or two ring nitrogen atoms, and the value of each of the other symbols in the formulae is defined.
Abstract:
A quick assembly heating system comprises a combination as required of: (1) a plurality of substantially smooth conduit lengths each having a male end portion and a female end portion of a larger internal diameter than the corresponding male end portion, each male end portion being formed with at least one recessed annular groove and each female end portion being formed with at least two protruding annular grooves, one of which serves in use to accommodate a sealing gasket and the other of which serves in use to form with a recessed annular groove of said male end portion of an adjoining conduit length an annular cavity into which a flexible elastomeric securing rod can be fed through an aperture formed in the annular groove; (2) and a plurality of pipe sections each provided with one or more heat dissipating fins.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a pharmaceutically acceptable prodrug which is a covalent conjugate of a pharmacologically active compound and an intracellular transporting adjuvant, characterized by the presence of a covalent bond which is scission-sensitive to intracellular enzyme activity. The prodrug may be used in a technique for treating a condition or disease in a human related to supranormal intracellular enzyme (e.g. phospholipase and/or esterase) activity, whereby on administering it to a human having such condition or disease, the bond is broken in response to such activity, and the pharmacologically active compound accumulates selectively within cells having such supranormal intracellular enzyme activity. Exemplary conjugates are esters of the carboxylic function in the formula, with e.g. heptanoyl-sn-3-glycerophosphoryl-choline or octanoyl-sn-3-glycerophosphoryl-choline.
Abstract:
A composite string useful for stringing sports rackets such as tennis rackets comprises an inner core (1) of plastics material, preferably polyethylene, a sleeve (2) composed of a multiplicity of small diameter filaments peripheral to the core (1), the filaments preferably being made of a metal alloy such as stainless steel, and an outer jacket (3) of plastics material, the latter having a higher durometer than the core material. Advantageously the filaments of the sleeve (2) are braided around the core (1) and may be partially or completely embedded in the core (1) or in the jacket (3).
