Abstract:
Embodiments of the present invention disclose a gesture mapping method for a computer system including a display and a database coupled to a processor. According to one embodiment, the method includes storing a plurality of two-dimensional gestures for operating the computer system, and detecting the presence of an object within a field of view of at least two three-dimensional optical sensors. Positional information is associated with movement of the object, and this information is mapped to one of the plurality of gestures stored in the database. Furthermore, the processor is configured to determine a control operation for the mapped gesture based on the positional information and a location of the object with respect to the display.

Abstract:
A method of measuring biaxial stress in an object of a ferromagnetic material in which material in a region (10) in the vicinity of a surface of the object is subjected to a conditioning method by application of a conditioning magnetic field that is at least initially at a high field strength. Values of biaxial stress within the said region are measured with an electromagnetic measuring probe (14) in at least two different orientations, the electromagnetic measuring probe (14) using an alternating measuring magnetic field that is at a field strength well below saturation. The conditioning may subject the region (10) to a low frequency alternating magnetic field (38, 58) initially at a high field strength, and gradually reducing the strength to zero over a decay time period at least equal to the time for many cycles of the low frequency magnetic field. Conditioning the material enables the stress to then be measured more accurately, and enables ambiguities in biaxial stress to be resolved.

Abstract:
Techniques are disclosed for fabricating optical instrumentation. The techniques can be used, for instance, to populate an optical bench with several optics that can be simultaneously bonded and simultaneously verified to precise assembly, and without the use of adjustable mounts or active alignment. The techniques may be embodied, for instance, in a jig designed for operatively coupling to a given optical bench. The jig includes cut-outs that identify placement locations for the various optical components on the underlying optical bench. Thus, once the jig is secured to the optical bench, precise placement of the optical components is simplified. In some such embodiments, the jig further includes a clamping assembly for each cut-out, so that once an optical component is placed on the optical bench via that cut-out, the clamping assembly can be engaged to hold that optical component in place while a deposited bonding agent is cured.

Abstract:
By substituting a ring optical parametric oscillator for the linear cavity, one eliminates the effects of feedback solved in the prior art by the use of isolators and by the purposeful off-axis alignment of the pump laser beam. The result is an exceedingly robust system with state-of-the-art efficiency for maximizing output power while preserving beam quality.
Abstract:
A higher intensity eye safe laser is provided for long range target designation or illumination as well as long range eye safe communications by providing a single beam line combination of an optical parametric oscillator and optical parametric amplifier which are used to double the output of the optical parametric oscillator while limiting beam spread to less than 1.2 milliradians assuming a 20 mm clear aperture. The OPO/OPA combination requires no conditioning, isolation or synchronization optics and provides a factor of two improvements in beam quality as compared to an equivalent optical parametric oscillator, with the subject system providing a compact robust configuration. The high conversion is provided by the use of a simple optical parametric oscillator seeding an optical parametric amplifier without double passing the pump pulse in the optical parametric oscillator. Low beam divergence operation is provided with minimum optics in a compact space with the optical parametric oscillator operating at a reduced signal intercavity flux which provides increased damaged threshold margins.
