Abstract:
A structural supporting roof pillar for use in a vehicle including an elongated, interiorly hollowed and polygonal shaped body having a selected arcuate lengthwise configuration and corresponding in placement to at least one of an A, B, and C vehicle pillar. A first component supporting flange is integrally formed, such as by overlapping end portions of a roll formed body, and projecting in at least a partially lengthwise extending fashion from a given cross sectional location. A secondary component supporting flange is affixed to a further cross sectional location associated with the body, such as further by welding.
Abstract:
A reinforcement member for reinforcing an outer panel of a vehicle door includes an upper wall, an outer wall, a leg and a reinforcement beam. The leg extends between a lower end of the upper wall and an upper end of the outer wall. The reinforcement beam is formed at a lower end of the outer wall for reinforcing the outer panel of the vehicle door. A generally S-shaped flange is formed between the lower end of the upper wall and the leg. A portion of the S-shaped flange is substantially parallel with the upper wall so as to define a recess adjacent the S- shaped flange that provides enhanced retention of a door seal thereto.
Abstract:
A continuous process for producing a shaped metal member from a feedstock comprising a flat web of metal includes a roll-forming station for shaping the web, a cutting station for cutting the shaped web into individual members, and a processing station for altering a physical characteristic of the metal comprising the members. The processing may include heat treating and/or shaping. The process may also be operable to carry out further operations such as marking, inspection, sorting and the like. Also disclosed is an apparatus for carrying out the process.
Abstract:
A system for delivering a coolant fluid to a workpiece has a reservoir for retaining the fluid, a pump for delivering fluid from the reservoir, a supply line in communication with the workpiece and a diverter valve. A bypass fine is in communication with the diverter valve, and the valve may be utilized to deliver fluid from the reservoir to the workpiece or to bypass the workpiece and circulate fluid back to the reservoir. The system also includes a fluid return line for conveying fluid from the workpiece back to the reservoir.
Abstract:
A method for tempering a workpiece is provided. The method includes providing a ferrous alloy workpiece having a martensite and/or bainite phase therein, heating at least a portion of the workpiece to a preselected temperature and then cooling the workpiece to a lower temperature. The preselected temperature is below the austensizing temperature of the alloy and the heating is accomplished in no more than 60 seconds. One embodiment of the present invention heats the workpiece using resistance heating.
Abstract:
A preselected metallurgical phase is formed in a body of a ferrous alloy by heating the workpiece to a temperature above an austenizing temperature of the alloy and thereafter contacting the workpiece with a quenching medium. Heat is input to the workpiece during at least a portion of the time it is in contact with the quenching medium. The quenching medium and/or the source of heat are regulated so that they work in combination to maintain the workpiece at a holding temperature which is above the temperature at which the martensite phase forms in the alloy. After maintaining the alloy at the holding temperature for a predetermined period of time, it is cooled to ambient. In particular implementations, the system operates to form a bainite phase in the alloy. Also disclosed are systems for implementing the method.

Abstract:
A process for roll-forming sheet metal panels for a vehicle box assembly, and specifically roll-forming monolithic one-piece sheet metal panels which function generally as quarter panels by defining both a side wall of the bed assembly as well as an adjacent side portion of the floor. A pair of such quarter panels are preferably simultaneously roll-formed in side-by-side mirror-image relationship as a continuous sheet is fed into and through a multiple-stage roll-former. The two side-by-side quarter panels, during the rolling process, are joined by an integral channel which extends along the longitudinal centerline of. the sheet . When the deformed sheet exits the roll-former, the base or bridge wall of the channel can be severed or removed to separate the two panel members while leaving flange parts which protrude downwardly along the free edge of the side floor section to facilitate subsequent assembly to a center floor section of the box assembly. The quarter panels, after leaving the roll- former, are preferably punched to form wheel well openings therein, and following both longitudinal and transverse severing to define individual panels, are transversely bent into the desired L-shaped configuration.
Abstract:
A forming system for shaping a metal article include a pair of die members (22) having a welding station, with welding electrodes (24a) associated therewith. The die members (22) are operative to shape a workpiece disposed therebetween, and the welding station carries out the welding operation on the article. The die members (22) may be part of a die quenchset which shapes and quenches a heated article. Welding may take place before, during, or after the shaping and quenching steps. Also disclosed are methods and specific apparatus for carrying out the invention.
Abstract:
An improved vehicle bed assembly, and process of manufacture, which involves formation of the floor pan (31) by roll forming, with the floor pan (31) having strengthening ribs (34) extending longitudinally throughout the entire length of the floor pan so as to terminate at the front and rear free edges thereof. The rear free edge (36) of the floor pan (31) cooperates with a rear sill member (32, 32') which has rib-end defining projections (47, 99) formed thereon and cooperating with the ends of the ribs (34) on the floor pan (31) for closing off the ribs and creating a transition to a flat horizontal surface defined on the rear sill member. The rib ends of the rear sill member preferably have guide portions (49, 102) which nest into and are fixedly secured, as by a spot welding, to the rearward ends of the ribs defined on the floor pan.
