Abstract: A winch (10) is disclosed which includes a base member (12) adapted for mounting to a support surface, a stationary shaft (14) upstanding from the base member (12) and a drum (16) co-axial with the shaft and including an inner surface portion spaced from the shaft and an outer surface (17) for holding working lines. A first one-way clutch (20) is operative within the space between an upper portion of the drum (16) and an upper portion of the shaft (14) the one-way clutch (20) having an inner race (21) defining a working surface (24), an outer race working surface (26) being defined by an upper inner portion of the drum. A plurality of rollers (28) are positioned between the race surfaces (24, 26) to effect torque transmission in a first direction from the inner race (21) to the drum (16) while the rollers provide antifriction bearing support in the opposite direction. A second one-way clutch (22) is defined between the lower inner portion of the drum (16) and the stationary shaft (14) the outer portion of the shaft defining an inner race clutch working surface (30) and the inner opposed portion of the drum defining an outer race clutch working surface (32). A plurality of rollers (34) are disposed therebetween and arranged to provide clutching engagement between the surface (30, 32) in a direction opposite the working direction of the first clutch means (20) to thereby provide back-check action for rotational positions of the winch (10) as a working line is wound thereabout. The unidirectional clutches (20, 22) are of the hyperboloidal surface-roller type, which engage in one direction and free-wheel in anti-friction rotation in the opposite direction.

Abstract: A positive axial clutch including a first inner race having a surface of revolution about the axis of rotation of the clutch, which surface is substantially a hyperboloid through every point on which two straight line generators may be drawn so as to lie wholly in the surface. A second outer race defines with the first inner race, an annular space between confronting surfaces of the races, one of which is the surface of revolution. A plurality of thrust transmitting rollers are disposed in the annular space between the races so as to engage with the surfaces thereof to make thrust transmitting contact between confronting surfaces for driven rotation of the first or second races in at least one direction, with each roller contacting the surface of revolution of the first inner race along a generator of the surface or a line which approximates to such a generator. The rollers are all similarly inclined with respect to radial planes. Means is provided at the interface between at least one end portion of each of the rollers and at least one of the races to permit slidable movement therebetween at least in a first direction while supporting the rollers axially thereof.

Abstract: An apparatus for developing variable rotational drive torque which comprises an elongated handle adapted for rotation about a first axis, first drive means attached to the handle for rotation therewith and for directly developing drive torque about the first axis, means to disengage the first drive means from the handle and for permitting the handle to rotate about a second axis of rotation located between the first axis and the location of force application to the handle. Drive engagement means extends through the handle adjacent the second axis of rotation and is arranged and positioned for rotational engagement with at least a part of the first drive means when the handle is rotated about the second axis so as to transmit torque to the first drive means about the first axis of rotation. Means is provided to selectively vary the relative position of a portion of the drive engagement means in relation to the second axis of rotation to vary the torque transmitted to the first drive means and thereby developed about the first axis of rotation by the first drive means when the handle is rotated about the second axis of rotation.
