The present invention provides a paste-like cleaning or detergent composition comprising a) a surfactant component comprising a compound of the general formula R 1 -COOM (1), a fatty alcohol alkoxylate and/or an oxo alcohol alkoxylate with an average degree of alkoxylation at least 5; and optionally an anionic surfactant; b) a compound of the general formula R 2 -O-R 3 (II); c) water and/or a compound of the general formula X-CH 2 -(CHY) n -CH 2 -Z (III), provided that at least 2 hydroxyl groups are present; d) an alkalinity source, and e) one or more organic and/or anorganic builders on a non-silicate basis; wherein the composition essentially is free from graying inhibitors on a cellulose basis, silicates and phosphates. Moreover, the present invention relates to a method for washing textiles using said composition, wherein the waste water accumulated during the washing process may be purified by a membrane filtration unit comprising reverse osmosis steps.

In order to prevent the ingredients of pasty washing or cleaning agents from dissociating, both during their production and when they are removed from transport or storage containers, and in order to further increase the storage stability of the paste, washing or cleaning pastes with a viscous structure are produced by using a mixture of storage stable, substantially water-free, free-flowing surface-active agents. This mixture contains 40 % to 70 % by weight of a non-ionic surface-active agent that remains fluid at room temperature and has the general formula R -(OC2H4)n-OH, in which R stands for an alkyl or alkenyl residue with 20 to 20 C atoms and mean ethoxylation values n from 1 to 8, 20 % to 50 % by weight of a non-ionic surface-active agent that remains fluid at room temperature and has the general formula R -(OC2H4)r-(OC3H6)p)-OH, in which R stands for an alkyl or alkenyl residue with 10 to 20 C atoms, mean ethoxylation values r from 2 to 8 and mean propoxylation values p from 1 to 6, and 1 % to 10 % by weight of a C10-C22-carboxylic acid and/or its alkali salt. These agents have such a high viscosity when they are not-subjected to shearing forces that they do not flow freely under gravity at room temperature, but when they are subjected to shearing forces they show a clearly reduced viscosity, become free-flowing and may be pumped under gravity.

Disclosed is a non-ionic liquid surfactant combination which, in spite of the fact that it does not contain added solvent, shows no tendency to separate over a wide temperature range from -10 to +40 °C and can be measured out easily, without any significant change in viscosity at various temperatures. The surfactant combination contains 20-50 % by wt. of an ethoxylated primary C12-C15 fatty alcohol with an average of 2-7 ethylene glycol ether groups, 20-50 % by wt. of an alkoxylated primary C12-C15 fatty acid with an average of 3-7 ethylene glycol ether groups and 2-8 propylene glycol ether groups, 5-50 % by wt. of a mixture of primary linear C12-C15 fatty alcohols and branched-chain C12-C15 fatty alcohols, with a methyl group in the 2-position, with an average of 2-8 ethylene glycol groups and, optionally, up to 20 % by wt. of water.
